Me and My Friends #52 - Release Day
A few years back, I had been doing a little research with some friends into the Chili Peppers' first year. I don't know exactly what started it. That period had always interested me, and I suppose there wasn't much of a detailed timeline available, especially for the very beginning.
We had spent a few months trying to figure out where a certain set of photos was taken, trying to uncover the real date of the band's performance, searching for copies of old street zines, that sort of thing, when I felt it start to snowball.
On September 21, 2018, I wrote this message to the friend who was helping me, Leni, from the RHCP Live Archive:
Over four years later, here we are. Out In LA is available worldwide now.
Yes, it's on Amazon, but not in the form I ever expected. This was supposed to be a small thing, knocked out in a few months and self-released. Maybe even just a free pdf on my website (which I have spent the last four years neglecting).
Instead it's a full blown hardcover book, from a real publisher, expertly designed and full of pictures; one picture, in fact, is a flyer from their third ever show, when the band were calling themselves The Flow, a world exclusive not available anywhere else.
(Oh and by the way, we figured out where those pictures were taken. And when. And as for the date of the first show? We figured that out too.)
I've gone on about the book enough here and elsewhere (another podcast with the Universally Speaking boys is coming soon), but this is just a quick note to say:
1) it's finally out!
2) thank you to everyone who has pre-ordered, and
3) for those that haven't, maybe the Kindle or iBooks sample will entice you.
Purchase links are, again, here. If you are having trouble finding a copy, get in touch and I'll do what I can to help. From the looks of it, there might be an immediate shortage of the hardcover, either because of Prince Harry or Vladimir Putin, but that will be hopefully rectified soon.
Thank you for reading.
On to the next project!
