Me and My Friends #47 - Out in LA
Hi friends,
As promised, I have news. My book about the band - OUT IN LA - will be released by Chicago Review Press on January 17, 2023. Here's the cover:
This has been four long years in the making. Four years of toiling away in online newspaper archives, messaging random people out of the blue on Facebook, striking up friendships with folks I'd only read about in Scar Tissue, cross referencing blurry scans of concert fliers, even consulting a forty year old copy of the Colorado Climate Survey. What started as a Google Docs note to myself has turned into this. I'm amazed.
It's been longer than four years, really, because I'd always been interested in this period of the band, especially that first show. I remember reading this page back in 2006, wishing I could know more, wondering what it was really like that night. The very first edition of this newsletter (since shamefully deleted) was an attempt at finding out the date, but turns out I was way off. I think my guess was February 10. Not so.
As the Side says,
the exact date of this memorable one song gig is still not confirmed
Well, it is now! And there's lots more where that came from; facts about songs, facts about locations, facts about people, all tied up in the early days of the Chili Peppers. What they did that year ensures they're still around today.
If you like the early days of the band, this will be the book for you. If you're looking to explore that area of the band more, this is a great place to start. It's just the first step in what I hope will be a whole new era of biography for them; one year down, thirty-nine to go.
Here are a few Amazon links where you can pre-order if you like, but it will be appearing at more stores very soon, and searching for the ISBN should bring it up in other locations. As far as I know Amazon have put it on each of their stores worldwide.
If you're having trouble getting a copy, let me know and I'll do what I can...
Lots more, about this book, and about other things, very soon!
H.
