I'm back!

The break is over, summer is here, and newsletters are back!

We must stop the centralization of podcasts

Podcasts are one of the few remaining truly decentralized forms of content on the web, and the only one that's still mainstream. Currently though, they are under attack by Spotify and others. We simply can't let this happen. When content becomes centralized, freedom of speech disappears. The platform that controls the space now has full control over what you can say, and how much income you make. After podcasts, the only truly independent media will be blogs. Nobody reads blogs. (except us nerds) Spotify is currently in the process of buying up podcasts, and runs an extremely popular podcast hosting company called Anchor. Another concerning fact about podcasts is that 67% of all podcast ads are dynamically inserted. This means that the host has no control over the ads being played, and if there's a centralized platform, the ads could be changed to become target ads. :(

What a week

What a week! So much to talk about, lots of news -

tooling!

I've made some online tools for stuff, and I finally made a page for them at https://reeseric.ci/tools. Currently, it houses a CPS Counter I made in a challenge with a friend, and a flag maker that I made in my web design class and I decided to put on my website for no reason. I guess, go check it out?

Mind the gap

Excuse the lateness, but I have some really awesome things to share with you!

reeseric.ci rebuild

I recently rebuilt my personal homepage, reeseric.ci! You should probably go check it out, but be warned, I did not put any design effort besides finding a font. It's what happens when you just use Markdown and nothing else...

thoughts is done! (kinda)

sun-monday

I don't have much to say this week, but I'll try to pump out another newsletter. Let's see how this goes :)

redirect.pizza

I found this really cool service called redirect.pizza, and it does exactly what it says on the tin. It just redirects from one URL to another. You set it up, point your DNS, and boom - a simple 301 or 302. I'm very surprised that Cloudflare doesn't offer this without using Page Rules, which are flaky at best, and broken at worst. Good job Enflow!

I got a lot to share, so I'll spare the cliché intro. Move along!

Gestures galore

I recently acquired a magic trackpad for my desk and I have to say that it is awesome. I have used trackpads all my life because of laptops, and I feel right at home on this. What I love the most, is that all the GNOME gestures that I use when I'm "on the go", work flawlessly at my desk. I don't have to have two different workflows, I just swipe up with 3 fingers everywhere. The only complaint is that it's a bit unwieldy at times for my small hands, but it's something I can tell I'll get used to. Highly recommended if you can afford the steep price. They pop up on Craigslist from time-to-time, in my area at least, so stay on the lookout.

Yeet my life out the door

Hello! I never know how to introduce this newsletter, so here it is: Another week, another email sent. I'm actually sending it on time for once!

thoughts.reeseric.ci

I'm working on a new website that will collect short thoughts throughout the week (like twitter), and then I will compile them for the newsletter. I'm making it in SvelteKit if you're interested.

Princeton Review Kinematics (nothing to do with the newsletter pls don't unsubscribe)

Hello everyone! Me ramble, me write.

Observable(hq)

I have been absolutely loving working with Observable. Observable is an interactive JavaScript notebook creator. (think jupyter notebook but for js) It allows me to easily test my JavaScript code in a nice interactive editor and iterate on my code superfast. It is also designed for a lot of data visualization, and I have been doing stats for my basketball team and I can confirm that the data viz tools are awesome. Highly recommended.

Runnin' from Sunday

Hello everyone! I got some interesting bits to share with you all this week, including how to get free custom email addresses! I also share my opinions on Jest after writing a lot of tests recently. My server migration plans are pretty spicy, and I really need some help setting up K3OS on my Pi with Rancher.

Free custom email addresses with Cloudflare & Postmark!

(assuming you already have a custom domain and email address)

Cloudflare recently launched a new service called Email Routing, it lets you forward emails on your domain, to any other email address outside your domain.

Happy Belated Newsletter!

Yes, my newsletter is an occasion, don't ask why.

This will be a pretty borin' snorin' newsletter, as I was slammed all last week with late work. (it's the last week of my grading period)

P.S. not sorry for the late newsletter

Uno!

Intro

This is the first email for my new newsletter! Writing some kind of publication is something I haven't done in a while (longtime followers will remember the Tech Times), and I want to give it another shot.

I was doing YouTube and livestreaming, but I found that it took a lot of work to produce a video, or start up a livestream. I wanted to just sit down and tell people about what I've been up to. Venting about awesome stuff is not something I get to do often, but I hope this will give me an outlet.

Svelte!
