New Progger single and video today: "Exposition"
I’m supremely excited to release new Progger music for the first time in far too many years! Our upcoming fifth full-length record, “Chronology,” will be out on La Reserve Records on September 18 of this year, but we’ll be unleashing a trio of singles first, starting with the track that opens the whole thing: “Exposition” is now watchable on YouTube and steamable from all the usual suspects. Here’s a link to the video, to save you a search.
I wrote this tune in 2019 with the intention of recording it the following year after getting some touring legs on it. Touring was, of course, derailed by the pandemic and the utter chaos surrounding the years 2020-2021 in general. Additionally, there were some serious changes in the lives of Progger people: getting married, moving across a country, moving to a new continent, moving to a new continent again, having kids, getting gigs with major artists that actually pay the bills, things like that.
After years of delays, a bunch of us were able to get together at Church House Studios in Austin for three days in October of 2025, and we immediately, thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Everything felt like it was supposed to feel, and not like all those years had passed – some of the guys hadn’t seen each other in almost a decade.
Aki flew in from Japan, Nick and Bryan flew in from Los Angeles, Devin and Johannes flew in from New York. They joined those of us living in and around Austin and we managed to smash out eleven tunes, with our eternal engineering ally Matt Meli at the console along with Johannes, who also plays bass on the album closer. Eric Dorris and Sebastian Sims somehow managed seven cameras, too, which boggles my mind.
As you’ll hear, “Exposition” showcases our three phenomenal guitarists – Carter, Matt, and Aki – while Daniel and Nick hold down drum and bass duties, respectively. I’m dual-wielding saxophone and keyboards (Dayne Reliford appears on keys for about two-thirds of the other tracks) and if you listen closely you might hear me layering and harmonizing with a Roland D50 trumpet patch. I was listening to quite a bit of ‘80s Miles Davis when I wrote this tune, along with Bennie Maupin’s “Moonscapes” and Herbie Hancock’s “Death Wish” soundtrack, so it’s a bit like a ‘70s action movie theme smashed up with an ‘80s funk-fusion crunch-fest.
Another single and video will be released in a few weeks, so stay tuned! Thank you so very much for your patience, it took us a long time to get this new record done but I’m extremely pleased with how it turned out and I very much hope you enjoy listening to it.
