Why Do We Fight Change?
🌼 Jill's Bright Spot
This Week's Bloom 🌸
Marigold — Warmth • Creativity • Determination
The cheerful marigold keeps blooming as the seasons begin to change—a little reminder that something beautiful can grow in every season.Have you ever noticed how much we humans resist change? Well, I have.
Take my lipstick, for example. For years, I had my favorite Maybelline lipstick. Totally Toffee was my color. I loved it. And most importantly, I didn't have to try on which of the other shades of pink might work. Until, I discovered Maybelline had discontinued it. Discontinued. No!
Was there a meeting about this? Did anyone think to consult the women who had been faithfully buying lipstick #215? Apparently not.
So there I was, staring at my computer screen, trying to find a replacement for a color that had been perfectly wonderful just the way it was. I wasn't asking for a makeover. I just wanted my lipstick! 😉
Then there's technology.

Just when I finally figure out how something works, someone announces an “exciting new update.” Exciting for whom? I was doing just fine with the old version, thank you very much. 😉
Yet here we are in the Fall, when nature is giving us perhaps the most beautiful example of change there is. Leaves change color, days grow shorter and birds begin their journeys south. It just feels different—there ‘s a crispness in the air.
Maybe there's something we can learn from that. Looking back over my life, some of the changes I worried about eventually brought blessings I never could have anticipated. New homes brought new neighbors and new experiences brought new friends. Life’s unexpected turns took me places I might never have chosen on my own. Some changes simply taught me that I was stronger and more adaptable than I thought.
That's the tricky thing about change. When we're standing at the beginning of it, we can't see what waits on the other side. Maybe that's why it can feel uncomfortable. We like knowing what comes next, at least I do, anyway. But life rarely gives us the entire itinerary in advance. Sometimes all we can do is take the next step, have a little faith and trust that we'll figure things out along the way. That doesn't mean every change is easy—or even welcome. But perhaps we don't have to immediately decide whether a change is good or bad. Maybe we can simply say, “Let's see where this takes me.”
So this fall, while nature is busy changing all around us, I'm going to try to become a little better at accepting change in my own life. I'll embrace the chillier weather, maybe try something different and remain open to the unexpected. I may even attempt to appreciate the next software update. Okay—let's not get carried away, though. 😉
🌼 Before We Turn the Page...
Is someone you know going through a change right now? A new beginning—a job or move? Reach out, send a note or invite them for coffee. You don't have to know the perfect thing to say. Sometimes simply reminding someone, “I'm here,” is enough.
And if you're the one facing change? Be good to yourself, keep moving forward, and look for the positive in each experience. And remember...
Every season has something beautiful waiting to bloom.
