Daily Market Brief — 2026-07-13
Before the bell rings — here's the tape.
Volatility sits in its normal band (VIX 16.50, +9.78%) and the S&P 500 is +8.8% above its 200-day average. A fresh Iran/Hormuz-closure headline is repricing this morning's tape — crude +4.10% and volatility bid — while Meta jumped +5.97% on a $50B AI data-center plan and biotech (IBB −2.68%) lagged; Asia closed softer, led lower by Korea. (Figures reflect the last completed session; crude and volatility already show this morning's repricing.)

Observations
Today's setup: An overnight headline that Iran has again closed the Strait of Hormuz is doing most of the work into the open — crude is up 4.1%, oil-services shares are bid, and equity volatility has firmed even though Friday's tape closed higher. Underneath the geopolitics, the market's dominant engine remains the AI build-out: Meta committed to a $50 billion Louisiana data center, Intel to €5 billion of new European fabs, and Morgan Stanley now sees hyperscaler capital spending reaching $1.2 trillion by 2027. Treasury yields ticked up across the curve, the dollar held flat, and the week ahead is dense with catalysts — the big banks begin reporting Tuesday, with ASML, Netflix, TSMC and the major health-care names close behind.
The Strait of Hormuz carries roughly a fifth of the world's seaborne oil, so a credible closure headline mechanically lifts crude and the whole energy complex — which is exactly what we got, WTI +4.1% with oil-services outperforming. Two things temper it: OPEC trimmed its 2026 demand-growth forecast, and crude's own implied-volatility gauge actually fell — a sign the options market is treating this as a familiar, likely-transient headline rather than a durable supply shock. The read into the open is a risk-off tilt concentrated in energy and in hedging flows, not a wholesale repricing of growth.
The through-line across the biggest single-stock moves is that same capital-spending cycle. Meta's $50 billion data-center commitment sent the shares up nearly 6% and pulled communication-services higher; Intel's €5 billion European expansion and a Street forecast of $1.2 trillion in hyperscaler spending by 2027 reinforce the demand backdrop for chips and the equipment that makes them — with ASML and TSMC both reporting this week. This build-out has been the market's strongest tailwind for three years, but its standing risk is a digestion phase: if Mag-7 spending guidance softens, the semiconductor trade tends to reverse hard, so this week's chip-equipment results carry outsized weight. That tension also shows up abroad — memory-chip names sold off sharply into the weekend (Micron and SanDisk both down heavily), and Korea's memory-heavy market fell far more than logic-heavy Taiwan, which finished flat.
Rates leaned the other way. Yields rose along the curve with the short end leading — a mild flattening that usually accompanies a firmer near-term policy view — and the 30-year sits just above 5%. Higher yields would ordinarily pull the dollar up, but the dollar index was flat, and gold slipped modestly as the opportunity cost of holding a zero-yield asset edged higher. None of these moves were large; together they describe a market leaning slightly toward tighter-for-longer without much conviction. The equity fear gauge tells the same story — it jumped nearly 10% off a low base even as Friday's cash indexes closed higher, the signature of hedging demand building ahead of a known catalyst calendar rather than active selling, and that bid was concentrated in broad-index protection while Nasdaq-specific volatility eased. With sentiment sitting neutral and earnings season opening Tuesday, the setup favors two-sided, event-driven trading over a clean directional trend.
