Observations

Today's setup: Friday's session closed unambiguously risk-on — the S&P 500 at a record 7,575, the VIX crushed five percent to 15, credit wide open — and then the weekend delivered the largest Middle-East escalation of the year: US strikes on more than 140 Iranian military targets, Iranian retaliation against US bases in Kuwait and Qatar, and renewed risk around the Strait of Hormuz. None of that is in the prices below. Crude settled Friday at $71.41, gold at $4,114, and Sunday's tape doesn't exist yet — Monday's open is where the weekend gets priced. The tension heading into the week: record-high equities and near-complacent index volatility on one side, an unpriced oil-supply shock plus a Federal Reserve that just published its most hawkish minutes since 2022 on the other.

Geopolitical shocks of this shape follow a well-worn playbook: gold catches a safe-haven bid, defense names rally on demand anticipation, oil prices a supply-disruption premium, and emerging markets come under pressure. The Hormuz angle matters more than the headline strikes — the strait doesn't need a formal blockade to close, because marine insurers withdrawing coverage effectively shuts it for commercial traffic, and Qatar is already advising vessels to halt sailing. Notably, the oil market saw this coming better than the equity market did: crude-oil implied volatility rose about 11% over the week and WTI gained 4% even as the VIX fell — a war premium was building under the surface all week. If crude gaps higher Monday, the second-order problem is inflation: a supply-driven oil shock feeds fuel and food costs and ties the Fed's hands on rate cuts precisely when the June minutes showed the committee already debating whether the next move should be a hike.

The rates market is telling the same hawkish story. The 30-year Treasury yield held above 5% (5.07%), the 10-year at 4.57%, and Friday's move was led by the short end — the 5-year rose almost 4 basis points against less than 2 at the long end, a bear-flattening that is the textbook signature of near-term rate expectations repricing upward rather than long-run growth fears. The dollar index sat flat near the top of its one-year range. Duration-sensitive equity corners shrugged it off on Friday — homebuilders +0.9%, REITs +0.2% — but the direction of travel matters for long-duration growth stocks if yields keep grinding higher into an oil shock.

Underneath the record headline prints, the tech tape is split in two. Fewer than 45% of technology stocks trade above their 50-day average, and the memory-chip complex was wrecked last week — SanDisk down roughly 36% and Micron down nearly 30% from their highs within days — after reports that Apple is testing a cheaper Chinese memory supplier undercut the pricing-power assumption the whole memory rally was built on. The money didn't leave tech; it rotated from AI-infrastructure suppliers into the hyperscalers that buy from them — Meta gained 6% on Friday and 11% on the week, a mirror image of the supplier washout. The options market prices this split explicitly: Nasdaq-100 implied volatility sits near 25 against 15 for the S&P — an unusually wide ten-point premium that says the stress is concentrated, not systemic. Options positioning adds a mechanical risk: an unusually large put concentration sits just below the Nasdaq-100 ETF's current level, and if price breaks through it, dealers hedging their exposure are forced to sell into the decline, which can accelerate a move well beyond what the news alone justifies. Korea's KOSPI — the most memory-exposed major index — told the whole story in one line: down 7% on the week, up 2.5% in a Friday bounce.

Earnings season starts in earnest Tuesday with the big banks — JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Wells Fargo all report before the open, with options pricing roughly 3–4.5% moves — followed by ASML Wednesday, then TSMC and Netflix on Thursday (implied moves around ±5.5% and ±6.7%). The credit market flashes no warning into it: Amazon placed a $25 billion bond last week at 1.6× oversubscription, and high-yield spreads stayed calm straight through the semiconductor selloff — the selling so far reads as a valuation reset, not a credit event. With index volatility this low into a heavy catalyst week and an unpriced geopolitical shock, the risk this week is priced in single names, not in the index.
