Daily Market Brief — 2026-07-15
Before the bell rings — here's the tape.
Volatility is normal (VIX 16.18); the S&P 500 sits +8.2% above its 200-day average. A chip-led rebound snaps back the recent sell-off — South Korea's KOSPI +6.2%, semiconductors (SMH) +2.5% — as ASML beats and memory-maker SK Hynix surges on a Barclays upgrade. It lands on a soft inflation print (consumer prices −0.4% on the month), which pulled short-term yields lower, while a hawkish incoming Fed chair and a live Strait-of-Hormuz oil shock keep the dollar and crude volatility firm; grains spiked (corn +7.1%, wheat +5.4%).

Observations
Today's setup: After a brutal mid-July chip correction — semiconductors had fallen roughly 30% from their highs and Korea's KOSPI had shed more than 30% — the tape is snapping back hard. KOSPI jumped 6.2%, Taiwan's TAIEX 2.0% and the US semiconductor group 2.5%, led by a 22%-plus surge in memory-maker SK Hynix after Barclays flagged a memory shortage and high-bandwidth-memory pricing power, and reinforced by an ASML earnings beat and raised guidance. All of this lands on a genuinely soft inflation print — consumer prices fell 0.4% on the month, the biggest drop since 2020, and wholesale prices posted their first decline in almost a year — which pulled short-term Treasury yields lower even as the very long end held above 5%. The cross-currents: an incoming Fed chair striking a hawkish tone, and a live energy shock in the Strait of Hormuz keeping crude and crude volatility elevated while equity volatility collapses.
The rebound is textbook AI-capital-spending behaviour. Korean memory demand — SK Hynix and Samsung sit at the center of the high-bandwidth-memory supply chain that feeds AI accelerators — has become a reliable leading indicator for the whole semiconductor complex, so a 6% up-day in Seoul and a 22% jump in SK Hynix tend to drag US chip names higher with them. ASML's beat-and-raise is the confirming data point: the company sells the lithography tools every leading-edge fab needs, so its order book is a clean read on whether the build-out is still accelerating. With semiconductors once again outrunning the broad market, investors are re-confirming the leadership that had wobbled over the prior week. The risk on the other side is equally textbook — this same channel reverses hard whenever the big cloud spenders signal a pause, and the group had just corrected ~30% precisely on that fear.
The macro backdrop is a tug-of-war. The data are unambiguously soft — a 0.4% monthly drop in consumer prices, much of it energy, plus the first wholesale-price decline in nearly a year — and the bond market responded the way it usually does, buying the front end and steepening the curve as traders pull forward the expected path of rate cuts. But the incoming Fed chair used a second day of testimony to strike a notably hawkish tone, and futures still assign meaningful odds to a hike at the next meeting. That tension — dovish data, hawkish personnel — is why the 30-year yield is still pinned above 5% even as shorter maturities rally, and it argues for treating the front-end move as data-driven rather than a policy green light.
Energy is the wildcard. A US naval blockade of Iranian ports and a 20% toll on cargo through the Strait of Hormuz have put a firm bid under crude — up roughly 13% from last week's lows — and, tellingly, crude volatility remains elevated near 60 even as equity-market volatility melts. That divergence is the market saying the risk in energy is not yet resolved. It also helps explain an eye-catching move in the grain pits, where corn jumped 7% and wheat 5%: the same strait carries a large share of the world's seaborne fertilizer, and agricultural markets price supply fear forward. Energy shocks feed into food costs with a lag of a quarter or two through fertilizer, diesel and transport, so today's grain spike is best read as the market getting ahead of that channel rather than a finished story.
Underneath the index moves is a clean risk-on rotation. Defensive corners were sold — health care fell nearly 2%, staples and insurance each dropped more than a percent — while cyclical and growth-leaning groups led, the pattern that usually signals investors reaching back out the risk curve. Gold and the miners caught a bid alongside it, an unusual pairing that reflects both a softer dollar and a lingering geopolitical premium. With the fear-and-greed gauge still reading "fear," sentiment is far from stretched — which, on a day the tape is rallying, tends to leave room for the move to continue rather than exhaust.
