Observations

Today's setup: A run of strong US data — a retail-sales beat, still-low jobless claims of 208k, and a Philadelphia Fed index that leapt to 41.4 — pushed Treasury yields up across the curve and firmed the dollar, taking the near-term case for Fed rate cuts off the table. US large-cap indices held their ground (S&P 500 +0.38%, sitting about 8.5% above its 200-day average) even as the move rippled through the rate-sensitive corners of the market. The bigger stories sat abroad: in Asia, where South Korea's first rate hike in three years set off a wave of forced selling, and in commodities, where a fresh Middle East supply scare kept crude bid.

South Korea's central bank raised rates for the first time in three years, and the effect on a heavily-leveraged retail base was immediate — reports point to more than a million margin-call notices and several hundred thousand accounts facing forced liquidation in a single week. The Kospi fell 6.4%. The same pressure is visible next door: short-dated Japanese government-bond yields have been climbing fast, and the Nikkei dropped 2.8%. When benchmark borrowing costs rise quickly, the most leveraged positions get unwound first, and that mechanical deleveraging — rather than any change in fundamentals — is what drives days like this. Hong Kong was the regional exception, up 1.3%.

With yields rising, the dollar firmed and gold slipped 0.7% (silver −1.2%). Gold pays no income, so its appeal fades as the real return on Treasuries climbs — a textbook relationship that reasserted itself today and showed up in the gold miners (−1.2%) and broader metals (−1.2%). Higher yields cut the other way for banks: financials rose 0.7% and regional banks gained 1.0%, both near 52-week highs, while rate-sensitive utilities lagged.

Crude added 1.3% (WTI near $80.60) after Iraq suspended loadings at its Basrah terminal following a drone attack and Houthi forces renewed threats to Red Sea shipping. Supply disruptions in a globally-priced market feed quickly into headline inflation, which is why an oil scare can tighten financial conditions even when demand is unchanged — and crude's implied-volatility gauge stayed elevated after a sharp week.

Beneath a calm index surface, US technology rotated. Communication-services (+1.7%, led by Meta +3.1%) and consumer-discretionary (+0.9%) carried the tape, while semiconductors (−1.6%) and the broader tech sector (−1.1%) lagged into Taiwan Semiconductor's earnings tonight — the company having just reported record profit and pledged $100 billion toward US manufacturing. Leadership is shifting from chip hardware toward the platform names that monetize AI, even as commentators debate whether a market this concentrated is getting ahead of itself.
