Observations

Today's setup: A Middle East-linked crude spike, a South Korean market bounce inside an ongoing rout, and a fresh round of AI mega-cap earnings jitters are the three threads running through today's tape. Crude oil jumped after reports Saudi Arabia is rerouting cargoes around Red Sea disruptions, which fed straight into Treasury yields (a modest curve-flattening move) and reinforced a sticky-inflation message from the ECB — even as US jobless claims beat expectations. US equities were little changed to slightly lower (S&P 500 -0.14%, Nasdaq -0.57%) while volatility jumped meaningfully (VIX +13.6%), a pickup concentrated more in energy and materials than in technology. Overseas, South Korea's KOSPI staged a sharp one-day bounce (+4.4%) after weeks of pressure tied to a surprise rate hike and reported forced liquidations among leveraged retail traders.

Crude oil rose almost 4.5% on the day (and nearly 10% over the past week) after Saudi Aramco was reported rerouting cargoes to avoid Red Sea disruptions — a textbook supply-shock event. The move fed straight through to the rates market: five-, ten- and thirty-year Treasury yields all rose, with the shorter maturities moving slightly more than the long end — a mild flattening of the curve that typically reflects the market pricing in less policy easing rather than more. The dollar firmed slightly even as most commodities, from crude to corn to cotton, rallied together — an unusual pairing, since a stronger dollar normally weighs on commodity prices; today the supply-disruption story dominated the usual currency relationship.

A cluster of AI-related headlines weighed on sentiment: Tesla's earnings miss came paired with a surprise increase in AI/robotics capital spending, a widely-noted warning about a widening valuation split among AI stocks, and fresh questions about Google's AI leadership roadmap. Communication-services and consumer-discretionary names lagged on the news, while utilities and semiconductors held up — plausibly because rising power demand from AI data centers remains a tailwind for both sectors even when the mega-cap AI story itself wobbles. Meta, with no company-specific news of its own today, likely drifted lower in sympathy with the broader unease around AI leadership and spending rather than for any reason particular to the company.

Volatility rose considerably more than the modest equity decline would suggest, and — much like a similar pattern seen roughly a week and a half ago — the pickup showed up far more in broad-market volatility than in technology-specific volatility, consistent with today's action being concentrated in energy and materials rather than tech. Overseas, South Korea's stock market remains in a technical bear market after a sharp multi-week slide tied to a surprise central-bank rate hike and reports of heavy forced liquidation among leveraged retail accounts, though it staged a strong bounce today; elevated short-term Japanese government bond yields are adding to regional funding-cost pressure worth watching in the days ahead.
