Observations

Today's setup: Renewed Middle East tension pushed oil to a six-week high and drove a sharp jump in crude-market volatility, after fresh warnings that any Iranian strike on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz would draw a US military response. Under normal circumstances that kind of headline knocks stocks lower — and it did exactly that just four days ago — but today US equities rallied broadly instead, with the S&P 500 up 0.89%, the Nasdaq up 1.29%, and small caps up 1.53%. The difference-maker was a wave of AI-infrastructure news: a major chip-and-investment deal between AMD and Anthropic, Taiwan Semiconductor doubling down on its US manufacturing build-out, and a new government-backed push into AI compute infrastructure. Semiconductor and gold-mining stocks led the sector gains, and gold itself firmed as a geopolitical hedge even as broader equity volatility stayed contained.

The Hormuz-threat headline followed a well-worn script — a warning of retaliation over shipping attacks tends to lift oil, lift oil-market volatility, and put a bid under gold as investors hedge against a wider disruption. All three of those moved as expected today. What didn't follow the script was equities: a nearly identical flare-up earlier this month sent the S&P 500 and semiconductor stocks lower, but today both were solidly higher. That suggests traders are, for now, treating the latest threat as rhetoric rather than a signal of an imminent supply shock — though that read can flip quickly if the situation escalates further.

The bigger driver of today's tape was AI infrastructure spending. Chipmaker AMD's new supply-and-investment tie-up with Anthropic, Taiwan Semiconductor's continued guidance that its build-out has years left to run (alongside plans to raise chip prices as much as 10% starting in 2027), and a fresh round of US government backing for AI-compute infrastructure all reinforced the same theme: money keeps flowing to the companies enabling the AI build-out. Semiconductor stocks led the market with a near-5% sector gain, and materials tied to the mining and power side of that story rallied even harder.

Under the surface, volatility told a mixed story. The VIX ticked modestly higher even as stocks rose — an unusual pairing that shows up when investors keep some hedges on through a rally, and today's still-live geopolitical risk is a plausible reason why. Oil-market volatility moved much more sharply, in line with the bigger jump in crude itself. Treasury yields drifted a touch higher across the curve and the dollar was little changed — not enough movement on either front to explain today's sharp gains in gold, grains, or crude, which look driven more by their own individual stories than by a broad dollar or rate shift.
