Observations

Today's setup: Three catalysts converge this session — the FOMC rate decision at 2pm ET (hold expected, but 30% hike probability priced in the options market), Meta and Microsoft earnings after the close, and an overnight geopolitical escalation in Iraq that sent crude oil surging over 6%. Markets are threading between defensive rotation and pre-event caution, with financials and health care pushing to 52-week highs while semiconductors and technology sell off on both the TSMC earthquake disruption and the rate-uncertainty overhang.

The oil spike follows U.S. and Saudi airstrikes on Iran-backed militias in Iraq. When geopolitical events threaten a major crude supply corridor, the commodity price responds immediately — but energy equities (XLE −3.44%, XOP −4.41%) are actually falling. This is a well-documented divergence: equity markets are discounting the demand-destruction and inflation-tightening chain that typically follows a sustained oil spike, while the futures market prices the supply shock in isolation. If the disruption proves short-lived, energy equities typically recover; if it persists and feeds into CPI, the Fed is forced into a more restrictive posture that compresses valuations broadly.

Semiconductors are taking a double hit. The Japan earthquake damaged TSMC's Kumamoto fab — TSMC is inspecting equipment and conducting recovery operations. The South Korean equity market suffered an extraordinary decline (KOSPI −16%), consistent with cascading margin calls across a market with significant US-tech cross-ownership. This contagion channel — Korean liquidations spreading to Nasdaq — is documented and worth watching into the US open as forced selling may not be exhausted.

The gold market is providing a contrarian signal worth noting. Gold futures gained over 1% today despite rising Treasury yields (normally a headwind through the real-rate channel). In acute geopolitical episodes, the safe-haven demand for gold routinely overrides the rate relationship — the 2022 Ukraine invasion and the 2024 Middle East flare-ups showed the same pattern. CNN's Fear & Greed index sits at 39.5 (Fear zone), which historically marks a sentiment region more associated with recoveries than further selloffs — though today's event density makes that read less reliable than usual.
