Observations

Today's setup: Asia took the biggest hit overnight — South Korea's KOSPI fell nearly 11% and Taiwan's TAIEX dropped 4.7%, dragging the Nikkei down nearly 4% as semiconductor stocks led the rout. Back in the US, the Dow managed a gain while the NASDAQ slipped, a classic rotation from growth to value unfolding just as the week's most critical earnings reports arrive tonight: Meta, Microsoft, and Alphabet all report after the close.

The Asia selloff is not random noise — it's the same synchronized cross-regional pattern seen on July 18, when Korea and Taiwan also fell sharply alongside US semis. When global chip indices sell off together like this, the evidence points to a shared concern about AI capital expenditure growth, not a US-specific shock. South Korean chipmakers sit at the very top of the AI hardware supply chain, so sustained weakness there tends to signal that hyperscaler spending expectations are being trimmed. The VXN (NASDAQ implied volatility) rose today even as the broader VIX dipped — a clear sign the stress is concentrated in tech rather than spread across the market.

The Bank of Japan has a rate decision pending, adding another layer of complexity. Japan has been gradually raising rates from decades of near-zero levels, and any surprise hawkish move has historically pressured Asian equity markets through a well-understood carry-trade mechanism: when the yen strengthens, investors who borrowed in yen to buy higher-yielding assets abroad are incentivized to unwind those positions, creating additional selling pressure in equities. Tonight's earnings from Meta, Microsoft, and — critically — the AI data-center spending outlook they reveal, will likely do more to set the week's direction than any single macro print.

Elsewhere, the Iran/Strait of Hormuz narrative generated contradictory signals today. Trump and Iran's military spokesperson issued opposing statements about Strait access, yet crude oil fell 2.1% and crude-oil implied volatility collapsed 12%. The market's read is clearly that diplomacy is progressing rather than deteriorating — gold also fell, reinforcing the de-escalation interpretation rather than a flight-to-safety bid. General Motors was the day's standout, surging on a strong earnings beat and explicit acknowledgment from Trump that tariff policy has directly benefited domestic automakers.
