Observations

Today's setup: Markets open into a constructive but uneven backdrop — US yields fell meaningfully overnight (10-year at 4.68%, down ~6.5 basis points), reinforcing the soft-landing thesis after New York Fed President Williams explicitly endorsed the FOMC's latest decision. At the same time, the Bank of Japan intervened with roughly ¥5.3 trillion in the currency market on Friday, and that JPY surge is now cascading through Asia: South Korea's KOSPI collapsed more than 5% as yen-funded carry trades unwind. The geopolitical risk premium in crude oil evaporated after President Trump called off a planned attack, sending WTI down more than 6%; European equities (DAX +1.35%) shrug it off, while US consumer discretionary leads at +3.29%.

Falling Treasury yields are doing their typical work: they relieve pressure on long-duration assets and compress discount rates for growth companies. That explains Meta's strong session (+3.28%) — combined with Zuckerberg's cloud-infrastructure commentary and the broader narrative that the concentration gap between big tech and the rest of the market has closed, communication services and consumer discretionary have room to recover after lagging for months. The SOXX is still down roughly 23% from its highs, and AMD's earnings tomorrow (implied move ±8.4%) are the next near-term test of the semiconductor recovery thesis.

The yen carry unwind is the single biggest macro risk visible in today's tape. When the Bank of Japan intervenes aggressively, yen borrowers must buy yen back and sell the assets they funded with it — which is why KOSPI dropped more than 5% in a single session. This mechanism rarely resolves in one day; if the yen continues to strengthen, further EM and Asian equity pressure is likely, particularly in markets with significant foreign carry positioning. The Nikkei's more modest −0.94% reflects Japan's own equity market absorbing the JPY appreciation headwind.

Gold and gold miners are selling off (GLD −1.49%, GDX −3.49%) as the geopolitical risk premium that had supported them deflates alongside crude — gold miners amplify spot gold moves, so a modest dip in the metal translates into a larger decline in mining equities. Agribusiness (MOO −2.16%) and materials (XLB −2.34%) are the weakest sectors, while oil services (OIH +2.39%) and E&P (XOP +1.45%) are notable outperformers despite crude's collapse — a divergence worth watching heading into the open. Cocoa surged +5.91% on no identified catalyst.
