Observations
Today's setup: The dominant story is risk-on de-escalation: Trump's decision to call off a planned Iran strike drained the geopolitical risk premium that had been priced across global markets. Asian indices surged most dramatically — KOSPI +17.91% in a single session, TAIEX +7.98%, and the Nikkei +4.03% — while US equities closed Friday more muted (+0.70% SPX), with consumer discretionary (XLY +3.29%) and communication services (XLC +1.56%) leading. The gold safe-haven bid reversed (GLD −1.49%, gold miners GDX −3.49%) and VIX fell sharply (−6.44% to 15.99), all consistent with a broad geopolitical premium unwinding.
Yield curve and macro backdrop. US Treasury yields moved higher across the curve on Friday — the 5-year reached 4.46% (+9 bps), the 10-year touched 4.745% (+8 bps, near its 52-week high), and the 30-year hit 5.275% (+7 bps, also near a 52-week high). The front end rose more than the long end, a pattern historically associated with markets pricing a higher-for-longer Fed path rather than imminent easing. Duration-sensitive sectors bore the brunt: real estate (XLRE −0.51%), REITs (VNQ −0.54%), and homebuilders (ITB −1.18%) all fell. The dollar was flat (DXY 99.80), buffered partly by yen strength after Japanese authorities announced coordinated steps to curb the yen's slide — the yen rose roughly 2.5% against the dollar. Japan's Nikkei surged anyway, with the geopolitical de-escalation outweighing the export headwind from a stronger yen.
Oil and OPEC. OPEC+ agreed to raise September production quotas by 188,000 barrels per day, adding supply at the same time the Iran risk premium is unwinding. Crude oil futures closed essentially flat (+0.00%) despite the dual bearish signal — suggesting the market views current prices as fair value after already pricing in a weaker geopolitical backdrop. Oil-service stocks (OIH +2.39%) and E&P names (XOP +1.45%) nonetheless advanced, suggesting equity investors are betting on sector earnings power rather than near-term spot prices.
Financials and the bigger picture. Financial stocks continued to outperform — XLF sits at 93% of its 52-week range and regional banks (KRE) are at 90%. The market's read appears to be that a steeper (or higher) yield curve benefits net-interest-margin businesses, even as higher long-term rates weigh on rate-sensitive sectors elsewhere. Fear & Greed remains at 42 (Fear territory), meaning broad investor sentiment has not yet caught up with Friday's constructive price action — a setup that historically argues for further upside before sentiment becomes a contrarian risk.
