Observations

Today's setup: Canada's trade minister announced retaliatory tariffs, escalating the North American trade war at a moment when US economic data — Redbook retail sales at 9.1% YoY, ADP employment beat — still argues for expansion. The resulting cross-current is the key read: bonds rallied (10Y yield down ~4bp) while the dollar sat flat, with tech leading equities lower and defensive sectors (Consumer Staples +1.70%, Financials +1.29%) moving in the opposite direction. Gold rose while crude fell sharply, a pattern that historically tracks recession-fear rather than inflationary shock — suggesting markets are pricing the tariff escalation as a growth headwind, not a cost-push inflation event.

The tariff escalation is playing out through a well-established channel: US importers bear the tax, not Canadian exporters — the 50% tariff on Canadian goods costs the US buyer, not the Canadian seller. For companies like GM, which source parts from Canada, that cost either compresses margins or gets passed to already price-sensitive consumers. The retail data beat and employment print complicate the picture: in an expansion, companies can pass tariff costs to consumers (inflationary), while in a recession demand destruction prevents pass-through and compresses margins instead. The bond market's bid today suggests it is leaning toward the growth-headwind reading.

Technology and semiconductors sold off in a classic risk rotation ahead of NVIDIA's earnings tomorrow after the close (implied move ±5.14%). The AI infrastructure thesis remains intact — Cisco's partnership with NVIDIA on AI factory infrastructure was announced today — but markets are pausing ahead of the results that will either validate or challenge the current capex cycle narrative. TSMC, despite its central role in the AI trade, fell in line with the broader semiconductor index. Meta diverged positively (+1.66%), with its new Hatch Agent consumer AI platform signaling a shift toward monetizing AI at the consumer layer.

WTI crude dropped 3.28% as markets dismissed Treasury Secretary Bessent's Iran threat. Geopolitical rhetoric was overshadowed by demand-side concerns — crude's implied volatility index (OVX) fell 5.80%, confirming the move is demand-driven, not supply-fear driven. Gold moved in the opposite direction (+1.18%), and gold miners' implied volatility spiked (+3.63%), consistent with a fast directional move into the metal as a tariff-uncertainty safe haven. This crude-down/gold-up combination historically aligns with recession-fear episodes rather than the stagflationary pattern where both rise together.
