Observations

Today's setup: The dominant story is a sharp geopolitical escalation — Iran threatening Hormuz closure and pledging unlimited retaliation against any US strike — running directly against a falling VIX (14.81) and a modestly positive US tape. Yields are rising sharply at the front end (10Y approaching 5%), European equities are taking most of the geopolitical heat (DAX −1.60%, FTSE −1.45%), and semiconductors are the week's clear winner, with KOSPI +2.66% and SMH +2.21% as the AI capex cycle continues to override macro noise.

The absence of a crude-oil spike despite the Hormuz rhetoric is the day's most telling divergence. Textbook market dynamics would normally send WTI sharply higher when a credible chokepoint threat emerges: transit-risk concerns cause marine insurers to pull coverage, halting tanker traffic even before any physical blockade takes hold. Instead, WTI fell 4.21%. This tells you the market is treating the Hormuz statements as rhetoric rather than an actionable near-term closure — particularly because Iran has more to lose economically from an actual blockade than anyone. European equities, which are more dependent on Middle Eastern energy imports, are the exception: they are pricing in a risk premium the US market is dismissing.

Bond markets are sending a harder message. The US 10-year yield is now at 4.998%, a whisker away from its 52-week high of 5.016%, with shorter maturities rising faster than longer ones — a pattern consistent with inflation-persistence repricing rather than a growth scare. There is no fresh Federal Reserve signal in the news to explain this move; the bond market appears to be doing the hawkish work on its own. Duration-sensitive sectors are already responding: Home Construction (ITB at just 8% of its 52-week range) and Utilities (XLU at a near 52-week low) are both under pressure.

The semiconductor and AI complex remains insulated from the macro headwinds. KOSPI's 2.66% gain, Taiwan's modest positive print, and SMH's session lead all point to the same thing: the hyperscaler AI capex cycle is still translating demand into upstream chipmaker revenue. JPMorgan's reversal on Meta following a major AI development is consistent with this picture — though notably Meta's stock fell 2.43% on the day the upgrade dropped, suggesting the market views Meta more as an AI spender compressing margins than as a picks-and-shovels beneficiary. That distinction — supplier vs. spender in the capex chain — is increasingly relevant to how mega-cap tech names trade.
