Observations

Today's setup: Equities are surging into the US open as the AI capital-expenditure narrative re-ignited overnight — META is up more than 11% on its best monthly performance in 13 years, AMD crossed the $1 trillion market-cap threshold, and the Magnificent Seven as a group hit a new all-time high. Against that bullish tech backdrop, crude oil fell sharply (−5.65%), which Deutsche Bank explicitly flagged as the catalyst for a broad risk-on move across equity markets. VIX sits in calm territory at 14.68, the S&P 500 is 8% above its 200-day moving average, and the Fear & Greed gauge reads 34 (Fear) — meaning professional positioning is still cautious even as prices extend to new highs.

The dominant engine today is the AI investment cycle. TSMC, the world's leading semiconductor foundry, disclosed a 42% quarter-on-quarter jump in capital expenditure to $15.59 billion before the US open — a clear vote of confidence that demand for advanced chip manufacturing capacity continues to accelerate. When a company at TSMC's scale raises its spending by that magnitude, the market interprets it as a direct confirmation of the AI pipeline: semiconductor ETFs (SMH +4.02%), technology broadly (XLK +2.77%), and the communications services sector led by META (XLC +3.56%) all responded immediately. The practical caveat is that index returns are increasingly concentrated in a handful of AI-adjacent names. That concentration amplifies upside momentum today, but it also means any single earnings disappointment or guidance cut from a top-five holding carries outsized downside risk.

Crude oil's −5.65% drop is the most striking cross-asset divergence this morning. Despite escalating Middle East headlines — Israel reportedly mobilizing up to 200,000 additional reservists, Iran's parliament discussing Strait of Hormuz restrictions — oil sold off sharply rather than rallying. The likely explanation is that Secretary Rubio's proposed Russia-Ukraine energy infrastructure ceasefire signal is being priced as a partial deflation of the accumulated geopolitical risk premium in crude. When oil falls this sharply, energy equities follow directly (XLE −2.88%, XOP −3.07%), but the benefit flows broadly to the rest of the market through lower inflation expectations and easier financial conditions for consumers — precisely the channel Deutsche Bank identified as fueling today's risk-on move.

One notable internal divergence in volatility: the VIX is calm, but the NASDAQ-specific volatility index (VXN) jumped +5.70% to 20.39 today. This is almost certainly a single-stock effect — META's 11% surge in a single session increases realized volatility in NASDAQ-heavy portfolios, and options markets reprice quickly. This is a ticker-specific dynamic, not a broad macro fear signal. The Fear & Greed reading of 34 (Fear territory) reinforces the view that despite the rally, investors are not yet aggressively positioned — leaving room for further upside if the AI and macro tailwinds persist.
