Observations

Today's setup: The dominant story is July's retail sales print, which came in at −0.6% month-over-month — the sharpest decline in recent memory — triggering a broad re-pricing of the Federal Reserve's rate path. Traders are cutting their mid-2027 rate-hike bets, and equity markets are rallying on the "bad news is good news" read (S&P +0.65%, Nasdaq +0.81%). The curve, however, is bifurcating: short-dated yields slipped around one basis point while the 30-year Treasury edged higher (+1.6 bps), suggesting that while the market is pricing earlier cuts at the front end, term-premium pressures at the long end — including fiscal trajectory concerns — are keeping the 30-year sticky. The dollar softened modestly (−0.36%), and gold futures benefited (+1.56%), consistent with the typical relationship where a weaker dollar reduces the dollar cost of gold for non-US buyers.

Communication services led all sectors (+2.07%), driven by Meta's announcement of a $250 billion AI data center investment in Louisiana. When hyperscalers commit capital at this scale, markets historically focus on the competitive positioning it signals rather than the near-term cost drag — and META's stock response (+2.78%) confirms that read today. Korea's KOSPI surged +2.42% (up more than 10% over the past five sessions), buoyed by Taiwan's projection of its fastest annual economic growth in four decades on AI semiconductor demand. During the current AI investment cycle, strength in Korean and Taiwanese technology indices has historically been a positive leading signal for US semiconductor stocks, and that pattern is consistent with the mild positive tone in US chips today.

Agricultural grains are the outlier moving against seasonal expectations: corn surged +6.58% and wheat +4.02% in a month that is typically a soft period for both. The magnitude of the moves points to a crop-condition concern — likely heat and dryness across key US growing regions — and is worth monitoring as a potential food inflation re-acceleration risk heading into Q4. Coffee moved in the opposite direction, falling nearly 6%, likely on a Brazil crop estimate revision. The Eurozone macro backdrop is stable (Q2 GDP +0.4%), and Goldman Sachs raised European equity targets, though the FTSE was essentially flat and the Hang Seng slipped 1.1% amid ongoing China-exposure caution.
