Pondero Brief: OpenAI killed the Assistants API, no migration tool, apps broke

Pondero Brief - AUG 28TH, 2026

Plus: Copilot's model default flipped to ON before Sept 1, and DALL-E GPT dies Sunday.
pondero. BRIEF · AUG 28

OpenAI shut down the Assistants API on August 26, and there is no automated migration

One year after the deprecation notice, /v1/assistants, /v1/threads, and /v1/threads/runs all return errors.

Anything you shipped on the Assistants API started returning errors on August 26 with no grace period. The Responses API replaces it, but programmatic Prompt creation is not there yet, so any assistant your code built at runtime now needs the dashboard.

Also in today's brief

  • OpenAI Assistants API dead with no migration path
  • Claude gets a sandboxed browser, blocked from yours
  • Copilot model policy hits GA, default quietly ON
  • Claudeforce drops Salesforce's full CRM into Claude
  • DALL-E GPT retires Sunday, save your work
  • Amazon shuts Mechanical Turk after 21 years

Tools & How-To
Claude Cowork built-in browser illustration

Claude Cowork adds its own sandboxed browser, walled off from yours.

Claude now drives a Chromium window inside the desktop app that never touches your tabs, logins, or history. Credentials import site by site, with banking, email, and SSO portals excluded by default. Enterprise admins can switch it on today from Organization settings; Pro, Max, and Team finish rolling out this week.

Why it matters. Teams can hand Claude a web task without handing it a live employee session. Read our take.

GitHub Copilot global model policy illustration

GitHub Copilot's global model policy hits GA, and the default is ON.

Unconfigured GA models now inherit your org policy, and that policy defaults to enabled, so frontier models an admin assumed were off may already be reachable by developers. DeepSeek, Kimi K2, and Fable 5 stay off regardless. Enforcement finishes September 1.

Why it matters. Audit every model in Copilot Business or Enterprise settings in the next few days, before someone ships on a model nobody approved. Here is the 4-state setting to check.

Claudeforce Salesforce CRM integration illustration

Salesforce put its whole CRM inside Claude.

Claudeforce ships a Salesforce plugin with 37 prebuilt sales skills (meeting prep, deal-health review, pipeline analysis) reading live CRM data from inside Claude. The AIforce harness wires MCP servers to Salesforce's business-rules engine, so permissions carry over and one admin connects the whole team at once. The setup inverts the usual arrangement: the CRM becomes the AI's context instead of AI bolted onto the CRM.

Why it matters. If you are weighing CRM-plus-AI options, this is the new bar for how deep native access can go. Read the breakdown.

GitHub Copilot Customize tab MCP server guide

GitHub Copilot's Customize tab: which MCP servers to install first (and which to skip).

Copilot's Customize tab (GA Aug 25) is the first browse-and-install MCP marketplace inside the editor, and most of what is listed is noise. Our install order: the GitHub MCP server first, since it already reasons about your issues and PRs, then Firecrawl for live web data, then exactly one automation layer, not two. Read the guide or try Firecrawl.
