Moonshot AI ships Kimi K3: 2.8 trillion parameters, largest openly available frontier model

Kimi K3's 1.4 TB weight floor resets self-hosted frontier costs; every inference provider runs it by week's end.

JULY 27TH, 2026 · BY JONATHAN HILDEBRANDT

Moonshot AI dropped the full open weights for Kimi K3 on Hugging Face on July 27, the largest openly available frontier model to date. It is a sparse mixture-of-experts design with 2.8 trillion parameters that fires only 16 of 896 experts per token, so active compute sits near 50 billion parameters. In MXFP4 four-bit precision the weights need roughly 1.4 terabytes of GPU memory, cloud-cluster territory, not a workstation.
