A bit of different missive from me, advertising something completely different

As part of my Musica Do Circulo diploma, I’ve been assigned to put together a local music circle and study group. Please find out more about it below.

Part music circle, part rhythm workshop, part carnival band, part something else entirely… 

MUSICAL HUMANS is a new monthly musical study group, where participants will share music they like and then build songs and improvised grooves on the spot, together, solely using our voices, hands, feet, and anything else that we might come across in the moment or bring to the table. Each session you will be guided you through a series of connected exercises that help to foster creativity, flow, musicality, self-confidence and belonging.

Once a month, we will meet in a very low-key, relaxed environment to practise the skills musical humans use every day – close listening, copying, keeping time, non-verbal communication, singing a simple tune, reading a room, improvising, learning to relax, trusting our instincts – and will leave having made sounds you didn't know you could make, with people you'd never normally make them with.

It’s grown-up play, out loud, to a steady beat.

This study group is for:

Instrumental musicians looking to collaborate and meet with other musicians in a fun way, improve their ear training, improvisational skills, and organic ways of unlocking new ideas for songwriting and composition away from the computer.

Singer and choir members who want to sing with new people, have a go at vocal improvisation, and work with original, group-led material without any auditions or rehearsals required.

Drummers and percussionists interested in basic body percussion.

Complete beginners who've never thought of themselves as musical, and want an accessible way to discover that they are.

Parents and carers looking for an hour that's about their own play and expression, not someone else’s.

Performers of all kinds — actors, dancers, public speakers — wanting to build confidence, spontaneity and comfort with improvisation, musical performance and movement.

Teachers, therapists and group facilitators curious about improvisation and non-verbal communication as tools for their own work.

Anyone who used to make music and drifted away from it, looking for a way back in that isn't about getting "good" again.

Anyone looking to reconnect with their natural play-energy — doing things purely for their own enjoyment, with no outcomes or expectations.

Anyone wanting to deepen their sense of rhythm — drawing on the richer, more complex rhythmic traditions of Sub-Saharan Africa, India, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Balkans, and the ways they differ to most Western music.

Anyone feeling a bit isolated and looking for a low-pressure way back into a room full of people, mixing with different sized groups.
