When a sudden shock prompts rapid redirection toward a single alternative resource, the new activity can inherit the same concentration risks that undermined the original system. Building genuine resilience requires deliberate attention to ecological variability and the distribution of effort across several options rather than a one-to-one swap. Incentive structures that reward immediate economic continuity can unintentionally lock participants into the next vulnerable stock. The Newfoundland case invites us to ask, whenever we design a substitute in response to crisis, whether we are spreading risk or simply moving the same narrow dependence to a different part of the ecosystem.
