  1. AI5 is Tesla's next big thing right now — TSLAming (X)
Ming stated that AI5 is Tesla's next big thing right now, since the age of the Model 3. The comparison places the upcoming silicon alongside the vehicle that first scaled Tesla's volume production. Community discussion has centered on how the chip supports both vehicle and robot workloads. Source: x.com
  2. Drafting off established industry scale beats custom cut-downs — TSLAming (X)
Ming noted that in semiconductor manufacturing, drafting off established industry scale beats custom cut-downs every single time. The approach protects unit costs and delivery schedules when scaling into the millions. The comment addresses trade-offs between custom silicon and off-the-shelf memory components. Source: x.com
  3. Tesla Drive Away feature requires 2026.38.3+ software, US only — @Teslarati (X)
The feature lets drivers shift into Drive and pull away while the charging cable remains connected. Vehicles need software 2026.38.3 or later. Pre-2021 Model S and X are not supported. It applies to U.S. Superchargers only for now. Tesla described the function as intended strictly for emergencies and warned that misuse will trigger penalties. Source: x.com
  4. Tesla Model Y Dominates September 2026 EVC Sales — CarSauce
Electric Vehicle Council data shows Tesla and Polestar delivered five thousand eight hundred fifty four EVs in September 2026. The Model Y accounted for four thousand four hundred seventy six of those deliveries. Tesla delivered five thousand six hundred fifty four vehicles, up twenty one point three percent year on year. The Model Y represented roughly seventy six percent of the combined Tesla and Polestar volume for the month. Source: carsauce.com
  5. Tesla Cybercab Fleet Hits 158 in Texas — BASENOR
Tesla has now registered one hundred fifty eight Cybercabs in Texas. The fleet grew from sixty nine registered units on September 23 to one hundred fifty eight by October 2. 6. Elon Musk Says Tesla Cut Optimus Robot Memory to Scale Production — Benzinga
Elon Musk said Tesla cut the AI5 chip’s memory in half to seventy two gigabytes. The AI6 chip’s memory was cut by a third to one hundred forty four gigabytes. Musk called the cuts the only way to get enough volume for Optimus production. The changes should have a negligible effect on Optimus performance because memory bandwidth is the larger limiting factor. Source: benzinga.com

Tesla First Principles

Memory capacity and memory bandwidth trade off differently once a system moves from training to inference at the edge. Cutting total memory on the AI5 and AI6 chips lowers die size and therefore cost per unit, yet the bandwidth available to the neural network remains the binding constraint for real-time control loops in a humanoid. That distinction explains why the performance impact can stay small even after halving or trimming the memory footprint.

The same arithmetic appears in other high-volume robotics programs. When the limiting factor is how many weights can be moved per inference cycle rather than how many weights can be stored, designers accept smaller on-chip SRAM in exchange for cheaper fabrication and higher production volume. Tesla’s decision follows that pattern exactly.

For Optimus the cost reduction matters more than marginal accuracy gains because the robot must reach price points that compete with human labor across thousands of tasks. Lower memory specifications accelerate that cost curve without changing the fundamental bandwidth-limited performance envelope.
