- Tesla urges NJ owners to oppose strict AV legislation: June 17, 2026, Teslarati
Tesla emailed owners in New Jersey asking them to oppose Senate Bill S.1677 and Assembly Bill A.3968. The bills would create a three-year autonomous vehicle pilot but impose restrictions that make unsupervised robotaxi operations effectively illegal. Tesla noted that autonomy could have prevented nearly 600 road deaths in the state last year. The company is framing the effort as necessary to keep New Jersey competitive in transportation innovation. Watch for whether the legislation advances in Trenton in the coming weeks. Tesla First Principles
Factory-floor execution still decides who wins the electric-vehicle cost race even after batteries and software receive most of the attention. Tesla’s ability to bring stamping, casting, and pack assembly under one roof lets it remove entire layers of supplier margin and logistics cost that rivals continue to carry. When a competitor claims comparable vehicle pricing, the difference often traces back to how many separate companies touch the parts before they reach final assembly. That structural gap shows up directly in gross margin once volumes scale.
The same integration logic now extends to autonomy hardware. By designing the next inference chip in-house rather than relying on merchant silicon, Tesla can co-optimize the silicon, the vehicle harness, and the training cluster in ways an off-the-shelf supplier cannot easily match. The recent tape-out milestone matters less for raw TOPS numbers and more for how tightly the new part fits the rest of the vehicle architecture. Rivals that buy chips from third parties must accept whatever interface and power envelope those chips impose.
Yet vertical integration carries its own constraint: every extra process Tesla keeps inside also becomes a process it must keep running at high yield. A single weak station in the casting or battery line can erase the theoretical cost advantage until it is fixed. The discipline required to maintain that advantage across multiple factories is harder to copy than any single machine or patent. That is ultimately why manufacturing depth remains the more durable moat than any one generation of software.
