Grammar Spotlight: In Russian, adjectives must match the noun in gender, number, and case. For clothing words, this means the ending changes. Examples:

  • синяя рубашка (blue shirt – feminine)
  • чёрные брюки (black trousers – plural)
  • удобная обувь (comfortable footwear – feminine)

Unlike English, where adjectives stay the same, Russian adjectives “agree” with the noun – a fun pattern once you notice the endings!

Word Origins — Deep Dive: куртка This word started in French as “jacket” (jaquette) and travelled into Russian in the 18th century when French fashion words flooded in. But be careful – the Russian “куртка” sounds nothing like the English “jacket” even though they share the same root! The surprise is how many clothing words Russian borrowed from French during Peter the Great’s time. Here’s a memory trick: picture a French courtier handing you a “court-ka” jacket – the sound stays in your head forever.

Cultural Corner: Russians often wear a шапка (hat) and валенки (felt boots) in winter because the cold is serious business. Brightly coloured scarves and gloves are common gifts, and children learn early to say “Надень шапку!” from their babushka.

Practice Challenge: For kids: Draw yourself wearing three new items and label them in Russian (рубашка, брюки, шапка). For adults: Look in your wardrobe and say out loud “У меня есть…” + three clothing words you see.
