Under the Hood: Declarative Attention

The new Declarative Attention protocol lets a model emit explicit tokens that tell the inference engine exactly which parts of the KV cache it needs, rather than relying on proxy scores computed outside the model. At its core the technique partitions every generation step into one of three modes: full-context global attention when the model must search broadly, a narrow focus window when it has already identified the relevant region, and local-only attention for continuing its own recent output. The engine simply parses the mode declarations the same way it would parse a tool call and skips the rest of the cache read, producing the reported 31–52 % reduction in attended tokens. Because the decision logic lives inside the model’s own chain-of-thought, accuracy degradation stays small and actually shrinks as scale increases, suggesting the model already knows where it needs to look once it is large enough. The main engineering tradeoff is a modest increase in output tokens for the mode declarations themselves, offset by the much larger saving on KV cache bandwidth. Teams should try the zero-shot version first on any workload whose context exceeds roughly 100 k tokens; if the accuracy drop is still too large, the same declaration format can later serve as a training signal for learned sparse attention. The gotcha that bites most implementers is forgetting to handle the case where the model emits an invalid mode token, which requires a safe fallback to full attention.
