The Space Shuttle Enterprise anniversary was honored. Research SpotlightWebb in IC 348: star formation at planetary massThe week's most fully drawn scientific result is Webb's panorama of IC 348. The field is a nearby stellar nursery. The image is among the largest the telescope has released. In the upper right, protostars drive jets into surrounding gas and dust, producing bright Herbig-Haro objects β shock fronts that mark where newborn stars are still clearing their surroundings. The search target was the bottom of the mass function. Webb found brown dwarfs, some only twice the mass of Jupiter. That is not a rounding error on stellar mass; it is the planetary regime. Brown dwarfs occupy the awkward middle between stars and giant planets. Seeing them this small, in a region that is also forming ordinary stars, suggests the collapse process does not stop at a tidy stellar cutoff. It keeps going, producing objects we would classify differently depending on whether we met them in a disk or in isolation. Earlier cameras could not reach this faint or this cool. Webb can, so IC 348 becomes a calibration field for how star formation behaves when the products weigh as little as a couple of Jupiters.
