That is the scale difference astronomers now measure in some galaxies: the central black hole can double its mass while the galaxy’s stars increase by only a modest fraction. The mechanism begins when large reservoirs of cold gas lose angular momentum and funnel inward, feeding the black hole at rates far above what star formation consumes. Observations show these episodes can last tens of millions of years, enough time for the black hole to reach billions of solar masses while the galaxy’s stellar disk grows more slowly. One surprising number stands out: in the most extreme cases the black hole’s accretion luminosity exceeds the entire galaxy’s starlight output by factors of several. Yet the trigger that lets so much gas reach the center without first turning into stars remains unknown. We can map the final mass ratios, but nobody yet knows why the gas sometimes bypasses star formation so efficiently.
