BepiColombo’s arrival at Mercury will give Europe and Japan their first close look at the planet’s surface composition and magnetic environment since Mariner 10. After a complex series of flybys and a long cruise, the two orbiters will separate and operate independently in complementary orbits. Data on the planet’s thin exosphere and its interaction with the solar wind should clarify why Mercury’s core occupies such a large fraction of its volume. The mission’s findings will also refine models of how terrestrial planets lose or retain heat and magnetic dynamos over billions of years. Cosmic Deep Dive: How Auroral Ion Beams Might Have Organized Early Chemistry

Picture a single Earth-sized planet carrying an electric current equal to the output of every power plant on the planet today, but stretched across an entire hemisphere and sustained for centuries. That is roughly the scale of the ion beams that would have flowed through Earth’s auroral zones 4 billion years ago when the magnetic field was already strong yet the atmosphere was still rich in nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor. Charged particles spiraling down those field lines slammed into neutral molecules at altitudes between 80 and 150 kilometers, breaking bonds and creating reactive fragments that then rained into denser layers below. Laboratory experiments show that such beams can produce amino acids and other organics at rates orders of magnitude higher than quiet sunlight alone, because the energy is delivered in narrow, repeating pulses rather than a steady glow. The process is self-focusing: the more ionization occurs, the more the beam narrows, concentrating its effect like a natural particle accelerator. Yet we still cannot say whether these beams operated long enough or over enough of the planet’s surface to tip the balance toward self-replicating chemistry, or whether they were merely one contributor among many. The specific unanswered question is how the duty cycle of those ancient auroras compared with the much shorter, more intense events we observe today.
