week #28: festival girl, for the first time
hiii partygirlies we're back in your inbox for a very, very important (read: exhausting week). i'm excited for two reasons.... 1. fran in her mixing greatness promised me new mix drafts this weekend (i cannot contain my excitement) and 2. we're playing our first ever festival on friday :D
INFORMATION ON THE SHOW: fri march 8, 2024: THE NEW COLOSSUS FESTIVAL in MANHATTAN's LOWER EAST SIDE, knitting factory at 101 avenue a, 730 PM, 21+, as a part of the bands do bk night
a few fun facts about the festival, or really more of the lore. i first attended the new colossus festival in 2022 with fran and some other friends including julia and autumn and jihye as a part of the montreal showcase ("montreal night") at the lower east side venue, pianos. we saw fran's friends from montreal (where she went to mcgill and studied philosophy, lol) play in their shoegaze band bodywash and had one of the best nights ever, a night still discussed and cherished two years later. last year, after partygirl was rejected from the festival (lol), julia and i went to the showcase at mercury lounge with mary shelley headlining. although i was, in classic form, reeling a bit from jealousy and bitterness of rejection, we had a great night. plus the passes were free due to our rejection.
this year, after promptly applying and being excited, we're thrilled to play not only with mary shelley (a full circle for me to go from show attendee to sharing the stage) but also to play bands do bk's night at the knitting factory at baker falls. more lore: bands do bk is an important community/blog to partygirl's formation - it's where we found jonathan when he posted "drummer needs band" ad. it's where our single, desirable, premiered in september 2022. and who booked us multiple times early on in 2023, including our first show at arlene's, our first show at baby's all right, and our first show (that year) at our wicked lady.
even more lore: where we are playing, knitting factory's location at baker falls, although now a venue chain around the country owned and operated by partisan records, (actually i think knitting factory corporation may own partisan records as a subsidiary, but i can't really tell upon a quick google), either way partisan records is a label home to pj harvey, geese and laura marling, the physical location/building of what is now called the knitting factory was once home to the pyramid club. the list of people who performed at pyramid club is long and includes: ru paul, madonna, debbie harry, nirvana, red hot chili peppers, sonic youth. there's something there, about a place like that, that i think will never leave. and there's something sad about what's lost when a place like that closes (like many establishments, in 2020 due to COVID-19) and being bought by a national record label and entertainment company.
