Issue #15 - Give it one customer URL; get a list of companies that look just like them.
What it is
Most prospecting tools make you describe who you want using filters: industry code, employee count, geography, revenue range. That works fine if your ICP is "mid-market SaaS in North America." It falls apart if your ICP is "independent cold-chain logistics operators in the DACH region." Ocean.io starts from a different place: instead of asking you to describe your ICP in filters, it asks you to show it one. Give it the URL of a company you've already closed, and it returns companies that look and behave like them — across a database of 35M company profiles and 330M data points. The core mechanic is called Lookalike Search, and everything else in the platform wraps around it.
Where it sits in the stack
Ocean.io is a data provider designed from the ground up for Account-Based Marketing. It lives in the data and enrichment layer — it generates account lists and surfaces contact details, but does zero sending, sequencing, or CRM automation on its own. It does not include conversation intelligence, multi-channel campaign orchestration, AI-powered outreach drafting, or deal management — teams using Ocean.io typically need additional tools for execution. It pairs most commonly with Clay (enrichment and waterfall), HubSpot or Salesforce (CRM sync), and Apollo or Smartlead (outbound sending). The Clay integration gives no-code workflow builders access to Ocean.io's data, supporting up to 10 seed domains per lookalike query.
Three workflows people actually run
1. "Find me 200 more of these" — seed-to-list expansion
This is the core use case. Pull your three best-fit closed-won accounts from your CRM. Search for the relevant decision-makers at lookalike companies, then reveal verified email addresses. Use 3–5 seed customers to find hundreds of similar companies for your next outreach segment. Export the account list to a CSV or push it directly to HubSpot. Hand the list to your sequence tool (Apollo, Instantly, Smartlead — your call). The whole thing, from seed accounts to outbound-ready list, takes under an hour. One Ocean.io customer reported signing a first contract just 11 days after a target list was created.
2. CRM lookalike enrichment inside Clay
You already have a Clay table with inbound leads or unworked accounts. You want to score them against your ICP before an SDR touches them. Ocean.io lists Clay directly on its pricing page alongside API, MCP, and Webhook support — for teams already running Clay workflows, the integration is first-party, not a workaround. Set up a Clay column that sends each account domain to Ocean.io's lookalike API, gets back a similarity score, and auto-prioritizes the rows. High scorers go to a personalized sequence; low scorers get deprioritized without anyone wasting a dial. Contact enrichment then runs sequentially across 16+ providers — when one source doesn't have a record, the next in the waterfall is queried automatically, which improves coverage significantly, particularly for international contacts.
3. Always-on closed-won trigger via Unify
Unify (which embeds Ocean.io's lookalike API) lets you automatically surface lookalike companies whenever an account meets your seed criteria — for example, when a deal moves to Closed Won — and layer those lookalikes with other signals like website visits or recent hires. The practical version: every time a deal closes in Salesforce, a Play fires automatically, Ocean.io surfaces 50 new lookalikes, an AI agent picks the most relevant case study from your site, and a personalized email goes out the same day. One team reported driving $110k in pipeline within a week of launching this play. You're prospecting against your own win rate in real time, without anyone manually building a list.
What it costs
Heads up: pricing on third-party sites is stale. The slider-based credit model means the actual cost depends on volume and billing choice, which isn't immediately obvious — third-party review sites still show old fixed-tier pricing ($79/$129/month), which no longer reflects how Ocean.io actually charges.
What we can verify from current sources: Pricing is credit-based with a slider model — subscription starts at $0.071/credit (minimum 750 credits), pay-as-you-go at $0.081/credit (minimum 1,000 credits). Credits roll over for 6 months on subscription.
You only pay for verified emails and phone numbers, and unlimited users are included at no extra cost on all plans.
Now the math that matters: the tiered credit system (1 credit per company, 3 per email, 10 per phone) means costs compound quickly. A team needing both email and phone for each contact spends 13 credits per person — on the mid-tier plan, that's roughly 150 fully enriched contacts per month before overages kick in. That's a tight number for an active outbound team. All paid plans require annual contracts with no monthly billing option.
For agencies and enterprise, investment starts at approximately €3,000/year, and agencies get individual pricing — book a meeting via their homepage.

Who it's for (and who should skip it)
Choose Ocean.io if your main challenge is finding niche companies that generic industry filters miss. It suits small European-based sales teams with a defined ICP who want an intuitive, GDPR-compliant tool for AI-driven lookalike discovery. It also works well for agencies building cold-email lists for clients in specific verticals — LeadBird, for example, uses Ocean.io's lookalike search to build cold-email lists that reportedly book 20–30 meetings.
Skip it if you need a one-stop-shop. As one practitioner reviewer put it: "Would I choose it for contacts over ZoomInfo? No. But would I choose ZoomInfo over Ocean for list building? No." The lookalike engine is the product's actual value. The pattern across reviews is consistent: the company-level matching works; the contact data beneath it doesn't always. Teams doing high-volume outbound should treat Ocean.io as an account discovery layer, not a contact data replacement. If you're doing broad outbound at volume and need reliable mobile numbers in large quantities, Apollo or ZoomInfo will cost you less per verified contact at scale.
