Issue #8 - The outreach tool that puts your prospect's face on a whiteboard before you've said hello

What it is

lemlist is a multichannel outbound tool built around one core idea: sending automated outreach that doesn't actually look automated. You can combine email, LinkedIn, calls, and WhatsApp in one sequence, where each next message is triggered by the prospect's behavior. The thing that actually makes it distinct is visual personalization. You create a template image — a whiteboard, a coffee mug, a laptop screen — and lemlist dynamically inserts the prospect's name, company logo, or custom text. Each recipient sees an image that looks made just for them. For SDRs drowning in a sea of identical plain-text cold emails, that's a real pattern interrupt.

Where it sits in the stack

lemlist lives in the outreach/sending layer. It offers native integrations with HubSpot, Salesforce, and Pipedrive, with API access and connections to Zapier, Make, n8n, and Clay for workflow automation. VoIP integrations with Aircall and Ringover enable in-app calling.

Clay and lemlist get compared constantly, but they solve different halves of the same problem: Clay builds and enriches your lead list; lemlist sends the emails. It most commonly pairs with Clay (enrichment), HubSpot or Salesforce (CRM sync), and Lemwarm (its own built-in warm-up tool) — and can partially replace Apollo if you're already on the Multichannel plan.

Three workflows people actually run

1. Clay → lemlist personalized image campaign - Pull a list of target accounts in Clay. Use Clay's AI columns to scrape each company's homepage headline or recent LinkedIn post. Export to CSV with custom fields (e.g., , ). Import into lemlist and build a template image — say, a screenshot of the prospect's website with their name overlaid in a sticky-note graphic. Build the list and run AI research in Clay, verify and strip invalid addresses before export, sync the clean enriched rows into a lemlist sequence, then let Lemwarm and lemlist's sending controls do their job. Map your Clay custom fields to lemlist's dynamic image variables. Each recipient gets an email with a visual that references their specific company — not a generic placeholder.

2. Conditional multichannel sequence (email → LinkedIn → call) - lemlist lets you build sequences combining email, LinkedIn actions (profile visits, connection requests, messages, voice messages), WhatsApp, and manual call reminders, all from one workflow. You can set conditional logic to trigger different actions based on lead behavior — for example, if a prospect opens your email but doesn't reply, follow up with a LinkedIn connection request. The centralized inbox brings all conversations together in one thread, regardless of which channel the prospect responds on. Practical setup: Day 1 send personalized image email, Day 3 LinkedIn profile visit (looks human, warms the name recognition), Day 5 connection request with a short note, Day 8 call task fires. Non-openers get a different branch than openers who didn't reply. Hook your HubSpot integration so every reply auto-creates a deal.

3. Video thumbnail personalization for high-ACV accounts - Video personalization works by creating custom thumbnails with prospect names that link to personalized landing pages. The visual impact is real — these emails look different from the plain-text sequences that flood inboxes. Practical flow: Record one 60-second Loom or native video. In lemlist, build a thumbnail template that dynamically stamps the prospect's first name and company logo on the video thumbnail image. The email shows what looks like a personalized video — click goes to a lemlist landing page that also shows their name and company. The custom landing pages feature creates personalized micro-pages for each prospect, increasing conversion rates compared to generic links. Works especially well for enterprise deals where 10 minutes of setup per prospect is justified by deal size.

What it costs

lemlist's two headline plans for new customers are Email Pro at $79/user/month on monthly billing ($63/year) and Multichannel Expert at $109/user/month monthly ($87/year).

Multichannel Expert is the mainstream plan — it adds LinkedIn automation, in-app cold calling, Aircall integration, a centralized multichannel inbox, 1,500 enrichment credits per user/month, and 5 sending addresses per user.

Outreach Scale (Enterprise) is custom-quoted, adding unlimited guest seats, custom roles, SSO/SAML, a dedicated account manager, and advanced API access — minimum five seats, annual billing only.

The gotchas:

  • Credits don't roll over. lemlist credits expire at end of month with no rollover. If you have Email Pro's 1,000 credits and only use 400 in January, the remaining 600 are gone. You start fresh with 1,000.
  • Credit math is non-obvious. lemlist charges $0.069 per credit on Email Pro. Finding one email = 5 credits = $0.345. If you're enriching inside lemlist, use credits for sequencing verification only — enrich your lists externally in Clay or a dedicated tool first.
  • Extra sending addresses cost $9/month each. Email Pro includes 3 senders per user; Multichannel Expert includes 5. Additional addresses beyond the included allotment cost $9/mailbox/month.
  • Per-seat scaling hurts teams. A 10-person SDR team on Multichannel Expert pays $10,440/year before any add-ons. Smartlead and Instantly charge flat rates regardless of headcount.
  • The Email Starter plan — still referenced in some older docs — has no image personalization, no LinkedIn steps, and no landing pages. It's been discontinued for new customers.

Who it's for (and who should skip it)

Good fit: Founders running their own outbound where image and video personalization help small senders stand out, agencies running cold outreach for clients where creative features differentiate from generic cold email, and small B2B sales teams of 1–15 SDRs without heavy enterprise integration needs. If your ACV is high enough that one extra reply per hundred emails pays for a month of seats, the personalization premium makes sense.

Skip it if: lemlist is the right tool if you'll use what makes it unique — image personalization and multichannel sequences. If you're just sending text-based cold emails at volume, Instantly or Smartlead do it better and cheaper.

lemlist's in-app calling is a sequence step, not a power dialer — if cold calling is core to your motion, you need a dedicated solution. Teams of 5+ SDRs doing pure email volume will likely find a flat-rate tool pencils out better at renewal time.
