Issue #13 - The CRM GTM engineers pick when they outgrow spreadsheets but hate Salesforce
What it is
Most CRMs assume your business looks like every other business: a Contact belongs to a Company, a Company has Deals, Deals have Stages. That works until it doesn't. Where most CRMs ship a fixed data model, Attio lets you define your own objects, attributes, and relationships so the CRM mirrors how your business actually works. You can model product accounts separately from billing accounts, track VC investors as their own object, or build a partner pipeline that doesn't mangle your sales pipeline — without hiring a Salesforce admin or paying for a developer to maintain it. The interface borrows heavily from Notion and modern data tools: fast, keyboard-friendly, and clean, with spreadsheet-like views layered on top of a real relational data model. It's the CRM for teams that know exactly what they want to track but couldn't get an off-the-shelf tool to cooperate.
Where it sits in the stack
Attio sits in the CRM layer — it's your system of record, not your sending tool. Attio is not built primarily for outbound or pipeline acceleration. Email sequences, follow-ups, and sales workflows require additional tools or manual setup.
It has native integrations with essential tools like Slack, Segment, and Typeform, plus a GraphQL API and webhook support, allowing for custom integrations with tools like Clay, Default, and your own product backend. Most teams pair it with a Clay or Apollo for prospecting, a dedicated sending tool for sequencing at volume, and Zapier or n8n for glue logic.
Three workflows people actually run
1. PLG triage: routing product-qualified leads before they go cold — Connect your product backend to Attio via the REST API or Segment. Create a custom "Workspace" object that stores trial usage data (seats activated, features touched, last login). Build an Attio workflow that fires when a workspace hits your PQL threshold — say, 3+ users active in 7 days. Attio can trigger actions on record changes, stage transitions, or time-based rules, automating lead assignment, follow-ups, and status updates inside the CRM. The workflow auto-creates a Deal, assigns it to the right AE based on company size, and drops a Slack notification. No human has to watch a dashboard and manually move cards.
2. Clay-to-Attio enrichment pipeline for outbound — Build a Clay table that pulls your ICP companies from Apollo, waterfall-enriches contacts, and writes verified records into Attio via the API. AI attributes — custom fields on any object that auto-fill with AI — can summarize a record, classify a contact into an ICP tier, or run a web-research agent to find data like funding stage or headcount.
Each run consumes workspace credits, and fields update on trigger, not automatically. Once a contact lands in Attio, a workflow enrolls them in a sequence in your sending tool (Smartlead, Instantly, etc.) and stamps the record with the sequence name for attribution tracking later. Result: a single enrichment run populates both your CRM and your sender without double-entry.
3. Call intelligence → auto-populated MEDDPICC fields — On Pro, Attio's call intelligence feature joins your calls, records transcripts, and writes back to structured CRM fields. Call intelligence joins calls, records transcripts, and auto-populates CRM fields from the conversation, with templates for MEDDPICC, BANT, and CHAMP that extract qualification data automatically. After the call ends, an Attio workflow checks whether MEDDPICC fields are populated and, if not, creates a task for the rep to fill them in before EOD. Pair this with Attio's reporting to run a pipeline quality score across your entire book — no post-call admin sprint, no half-filled deal cards going into forecast.
What it costs
Attio offers a Free plan, Plus at $29/user/month billed annually, Pro at $69/user/month billed annually, and Enterprise with custom pricing.
- Free: Up to 3 users, 50,000 records, 3 custom objects, and 200–250 emails per month.
Includes basic enrichment and real-time syncing but does not include private lists, advanced custom objects, AI workflows, or email sequences. Genuinely functional — not a 14-day time bomb. - Plus ($29/user/month, annual): The jump from Free to Plus is mainly about removing the seat limit and adding email features. Call intelligence, sequences, advanced permissions, and priority support are not included.
The Plus tier's 1,500 monthly workspace credits are quickly exhausted by workflows and AI features.
- Pro ($69/user/month, annual): This is where most scaling teams land, because call intelligence, sequences, and AI workflow steps unlock the real operational value.
- Enterprise: Custom. GDPR compliant with EU data hosting; SOC 2 and ISO 27001 available at this tier.
The gotchas:
All paid plans are billed annually — there is no month-to-month option on paid plans. So you're committing upfront. - AI attributes and automation steps eat workspace credits. Credit add-on blocks run $14–$17 per 1,000 credits for smaller blocks, dropping to $9.50–$11.90 per 1,000 credits for 50K+ blocks. Budget this before you build credit-heavy workflows. - API access comes with rate limits, typically around 1,000 calls per hour. GTM engineers building high-volume sync pipelines should test this ceiling early. - No per-record fees, no hidden marketing-suite add-ons, and no implementation fees from Attio — which is more than you can say for the competition.

Who it's for (and who should skip it)
Good fit: A startup, PLG, or GTM team that needs a CRM modeled around your own data — not Contacts-and-Accounts. A small-to-mid team that wants a fast, modern interface without a dedicated admin. A revenue team that wants native AI enrichment, call intelligence, and AI workflows. Founders who've been burned by HubSpot's upgrade wall or who've watched a Salesforce implementation eat six months of RevOps time will recognize what Attio is doing.
Skip it if: You're a large enterprise needing deep territory management and complex sales processes (Salesforce). A marketing-led org that wants email marketing, landing pages, and service in one suite (HubSpot). A team whose primary need is a no-frills, low-cost pipeline (Pipedrive). Also skip it if your stack requires heavy bidirectional sync with a data warehouse or ERP on day one — teams running complex stacks where the CRM must stay in live two-way sync with databases and ERPs should plan for a dedicated sync layer alongside Attio.
