An optical illusion in plain sight

Hide a speaker, get some shade

Hi, hey; sup

Here's a little detail I like on something I'm working on:

Animation of my hand tilting an enclosure top to hide/show a speaker cavity

That’s a speaker grill that hides its speaker depending on viewing angle. It's handy for situations like this where the design's allotted space and the actual speaker itself are different sizes, but the whole area needs to look uniform. It also decouples the component from the layout, so I could theoretically swap to a different speaker later without redesigning the whole instrument. It also looks cool!

The exact angle can be set arbitrarily, but if it’s too aggressive it’ll be harder to 3D print… and perhaps even interfere with sound wave movement too.

The idea is straightforward, though there is a modicum of geometry to make the exposed "rib" size identical, regardless of skew. Notice how the pink bars are narrower on bottom and it sure looks like there are more of them, but there are indeed the same count in both:

If you look for it, you'll find this "hidden speaker" technique all over the place. An optical illusion in plain sight!

Promotional sunglasses, promotional-quality

It’s getting cold and gloomy here in the Bay Area, which seems like the perfect time to tell you about these yellow sunglasses I’ve been throwing into orders since the summer.

OSKITONE sunglasses in an order

They are not great, but they are free, at least for you. Get anything from the shop and I’ll include a pair and some stickers, on me.

All the good stuff is in stock, and I'm desperate to move it!
