One new tag
Navigating my new life as an immigrant while committing to growth in work and writing.
Adding a new tag to make sense
2024 as I mentioned in my previous post was not big on announcements on the professional front. I kept the same job and working on the same set of problems. I can’t say the same for the personal side of things. There were many memorable and momentous highlights.
During my last transition I wrote “Tags as frame” listing down the 3 tags that make sense of my world view. I now have a new tag of immigrant. This is an added lens and also partially the cause of why it took me so long to get an update out.
I will be working out of United states in the same domain of logistics with continued interest in agriculture. I am not sure what it entails but figuring out the regional market is my prima focus. Things are far more standardised.
It really has not sunk in yet what being an immigrant entails. People become your home as my country of residence and my country of birth both now treat me as an outsider.
So, back to being a novice and figuring things out. I also feel this year at work I can focus on progress and growth while meander a little on the personal front. It’s a new geography, culture and system. It will take some time to get the hang of it. I am in no rush.
Last year has also made me realise there is ton on the skill front that I can level up.
I took a look at the mind map v2 and realised that even if I explored many of the topics. I only wrote about one or two nodes predominantly.
I plan on turning my focus back on completing the writing on topics listed in Mind Node V2. Two other topics that I worked on but are not part of the illustration are operations and GenAI.
I am now confident in proclaiming that being good in operations is a continuous process with no end state. Data as an added sense makes the process of continuous improvement less cumbersome.
You will be dammed if you use GenAI and you will be dammed if you don’t use GenAI. The trick is knowing when and where to use them. The second half of the year I was figuring out how to embed them in my workflows at work. I am still just at the start of process.
In the end this year is doing the small things well and doing 100 reps of them.
Round up
15 times to use AI and 5 not to
This is good advice on when to use GenAI and when not to use them. I am adding this in round up since it aligns with my one of the nodes I invested.
Do 100 things first
Doing 100 things first is the only mantra I tend to follow when I am in a new place. The key here is to do them deliberately.

Reading has been spotty so no links for this issue.

A book titled “Talking to an empty room” - Sharad Joshi in Rajya Sabha is collection of speeches. One snippet on futures market in agriculture explains why they are effective and beneficial to farmers.
The futures market, despite many of the prejudices people have, and mind-set that they have, actually makes available to the producers, a possibility of taking advantage of the future time and space dimensions without actually having to incur the expenditure, which is involved in either waiting or transporting. … I made the point that the aam admi is really served by technology and not by any political or social system.
Yet there isn’t one startup in India working on making this technology accessible within the current regulatory framework.
My writing in this space and every else also feels similar to the title of the book. Many times I feel like I am writing into the ether, lost in the cloud(pun intended). Yet like Sharad Joshi ji I can’t stop and will continue to put in the reps.
Signing off till next time,
Vivek, wishing you a happy first month of 2025
