This weekend in Norwalk: Read on the Green finally happens, Cat Power at District, and Dreamin' at Calf Pasture

Morning, Norwalk. The library's first Read on the Green got rained out Wednesday and moved to tonight, which means the whole thing is still ahead of you. District Music Hall has two real bookings back to back. And Sunday brings the third of six free concerts at Calf Pasture, where the beach parking lot doubles as the venue and nobody minds.

Best for families this weekend: Read on the Green tonight at 5 PM on the Norwalk Green, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off on the library's big screen Sunday afternoon. Both free.

Read on the Green at the Norwalk Green, 8 Park Street, 5 to 8 PM. The Norwalk Public Library's first outdoor reading night was set for Wednesday and pushed a day by the forecast, per library staffer Victoria Oatis. Bring a book, a blanket, or a lawn chair, swap gently used books with whoever shows up, and eat from El Placerito Tacos, Mr. Burger, or the Mr. Softee truck. A book swap on a town green with three food trucks is a better use of a July evening than most things. Free, all ages, outdoors. Details.

Fruit Bats at District Music Hall, 71 Wall Street, 8 PM. Eric D. Johnson has been making warm, unhurried indie folk under this name for twenty-plus years, and the room on Wall Street is the right size for it. General admission on the floor, reserved seating in the balcony. Ticketed, all ages. Details.

Mahjong for Beginners, Session 4 at the Norwalk Public Library, 1 Belden Avenue, 10:30 AM. The fourth week of a beginners' run, so this is not the place to start cold, but the group has been steady all summer. Free, adults. Details.

Cat Power: The Greatest Tour at District Music Hall, 71 Wall Street, 8 PM. Chan Marshall doing The Greatest, the 2006 Memphis soul record that remains her best-loved, in a 900-capacity room in SoNo. Shows like this used to require a train ticket to Brooklyn. Ticketed, all ages. Details.

Norwalk drunk-driving crashes hit a ten-year low in 2025, two years after the city's first cannabis dispensaries opened. NancyOnNorwalk filed a Freedom of Information Act request and got the numbers: 15 crashes in 2025, down from a peak of 36 in 2022. Planning and Zoning is still weighing whether Manresa Wilds gets its own zoning district, and traffic is the sticking point. The 125-acre park projects up to 1.1 million visitors in the year after its second phase opens in 2032, and residents like Beverly Krieger have one two-lane road, Woodward Avenue, connecting them to the rest of South Norwalk. Third Taxing District Summer Concert: Tommy Taliercio and Tim Hayes, "Dreamin'" at Calf Pasture Beach, 1 Calf Pasture Beach Road, 5 to 7 PM. Third of six in the Third Taxing District's Sunday series, which general manager Kevin Barber says started about 35 years ago as a way to give something back to ratepayers. Four of this year's six acts are new to the lineup. No rain date, so if the sky holds, go. Free, all ages, outdoors. Details.

NPL Movie Weekends: Ferris Bueller's Day Off at the Norwalk Public Library, 1 Belden Avenue, 1 PM. Air conditioning, a movie that holds up, and no ticket. Free, all ages. Details.

Paddle for the Sound returns July 31 through August 9, ten days of paddling events on Long Island Sound. Worth putting on the calendar now if you own a kayak or intend to borrow one. Details.
