Jazz! Pop-punk! Other stuff!
If you listen to nothing else this week, check out these albums: Robert Glasper's Black Radio III, Avril Lavigne's Love Sux, and Judy Collins' Spellbound.
The Playlist
Gonna do another high level overview this week, but that doesn't mean that there isn't a ton of interesting stuff that's going to go unmentioned. You really gotta listen through the full playlist this week. It's remarkable.
For example, you don't want to miss YouTuber/bedroom pop phenom Cavetown's new single featuring one of my favorite newer artists, indie alt-rocker beabadoobee. Pop-punk band Mom Jeans. is back with their third album, a project in search of creating the fun-loving pop punk anthems a la blink-182 or Sum 41.
Dashboard Confessional is back for what feels like their billionth record (it's their eighth), showing that it's possible to be emo no matter how long you've been doing this shit.
Molly Tuttle's team up with Billy Strings is a dose of americana that I'm personally finding extremely exciting. I can't wait for this full record that she's doing with her new group Golden Highway. This is honestly serving The Civil Wars adjacent vibes for me, and I'm in love.
Songwriter TORRES takes some time away from performing her own songs to do a cover of Rodney Crowell's country hit Making Memories of Us. I'll admit that I know nothing of Porridge Radio, besides that they're supporting IDLES on tour soon, but hot damn if Back To The Radio didn't grab me.
There's a new single from the long silent Florence + The Machine (okay, she did a song for Cruella last year, but I feel like everyone pretended that didn't happen?) which has all the indie kids in a tizzy as she proclaims "I am no mother / I am no bride / I am King."
Indie rock staples Superchunk have their twelfth album out today on their very own Merge Records and AWOLNATION has an unlikely collaboration with Tim McIlrath of Rise Against.
Regina Spektor's announced a new record and dropped the first single from that, which is exciting.
Rot and Stray From The Path are fed up with the state of things, with singles Government Issued Noose and Guillotine respectively, while Avril Lavigne has a new album that's focused a little more internally as she proclaims that Love Sux.
Desperate people never stay desperate forever.
Stray From The Path - Guillotine
We've got jazz throughout the playlist, with Emma-Jean Thackray, Robert Glasper's new LP, Lonnie Liston Smith and all of their individual collaborators.
Tears For Fears have their first new record since 2004 out today and I'm honestly astounded that they're still able to deliver tracks that feel as fresh and exciting as the singles that I've heard this far. Really really jazzed to get to sit with this.
One of my favorite growing indie emo bands, Oso Oso is back with a new single today, which has me excited at the potential of a new album on the way. Oh, and metalcore giants ERRA have covered Muse with Stockholm Syndrome.
And apparently Scary Kids Scaring Kids are still a band? You learn something new every day.
