Em’s Fresh Fridays - Guest Edition

Hello dear newsletter subscribers. This week’s newsletter is coming to you from a stand-in. Em has a very important appointment this week and asked if anyone was willing to step in and give her a hand. I know her from a discord server and thought that, given how closely our musical tastes tend to align, that I could do a fair job on her behalf. You can call me sarth.

This week’s playlist is, if I may say so, a bit of a banger. We’ve got all sorts of incredible stuff in here:

  • Moving instrumental pieces (Jessica Moss has a new album coming, you’d know her from Thee Silver Mt. Zion - one of GSY!BE’s side projects.)

  • Some throwbacks to the early 2000s (Placebo is still a going concern! Avril continues to make music with Travis Barker! Korn are back!?? Dashboard Confessional is still sad!)

  • Ragers (Pup’s new single keeps the fire going. Hot Water Music have a new track and it slaps. Code Orange SLAY.)

  • Make sure you listen to the new Shilpa Ray song, it’s something special.

  • I even included a Taylor song for what I assume is most of your enjoyment. I have no idea if it’s a good one.

  • There are few head scratchers I’ve thrown into the mix just to see if you notice them. Let me know if you can pick them out. Someone from Rammstein guests on a track in here.

Albums of Note - These are all of the albums or EPs that are featured on the list, just in case you want to dig into them further.

  • Courtney Barnett “If I Don’t Hear from You Tonight” - I know it’s not just me but she’s been leaning into the Kurt Vile Energy right?

  • Devonté Hynes “Passing (Music from and Inspired by the Original Motion Picture)” - Don’t sleep on this if you’ve enjoyed the max Richter stuff Em has been sharing.

  • Jordy “Mind Games” - this is one is totally new to me but it seems to fit the bill.

  • Snotty Nose Rez Kids “Life After” - I’m cheating with this slightly as it came out a couple weeks ago but this remix is new.

  • Of course Taylor Swift’s “Red (Taylor’s Version)” is out.

Addendums:

John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” went platinum this week. Check it out.

Modu Moctar released a new live recording on YouTube that is worth your time.

While digging around for new releases I came upon an artist who I think you might want to check out - Angel Bat Dawid. She doesn’t have a new album out but announced a residency with New York’s winter jazz fest this year.
