Dream Pop (and other genres that feel made up)
It's a slow week in new music. I was only just barely able to scrounge up three hours worth of stuff to share, and that's including tapping into a few film scores. I think there's some good stuff in here, though.
The Playlist
Metronomy's seventh studio record is finally here. It's exciting to me that there's still space for nu-disco artists in this day and age, so seeing these veterans on so many playlists has brought me joy. We've also got a full length from Alice Glass! Possibly better known as the voice behind Crystal Castles, she's here with a solo LP of... dark electropop? hyperpop? horrorpop? Not really sure what to call this, but it's dark and it's fuckin' cool as shit.
Instrumental post-rock band And So I Watch You From Afar has finally released the back half of their new album and YouTube phenom Alex Melton has a record of covers where he brings a bunch of pop-punk classics into modern production styling.
Speaking of covers, Skatune Network's decided to cover the entirety of Beach Bunny's Honeymoon, which will be a must-hear for a very specific subset of people. Hurray For The Riff Raff just debuted with an LP on Nonesuch Records that is written as americana from the perspective of a hardcore fan? It's clever and bright.
Khruangbin and Leon Bridges have teamed up again for a follow-up to their 2020 EP Texas Sun, this time titled Texas Moon. This merger of psych-rock and neo-soul is kinda perfect, if you ask me. It also perfectly leads us into indie dream pop band Basement Revolver's sophmore release Embody.
I feel like a lot of people have discounted Foxy Shazam over the years, simply because they're [checks notes] a glam rock band that's active in the 2020s. Okay, I get it y'all, but this band is more than just The Guy Who Did The Big Sexy Hook For Macklemore's "Downtown". They're a legitimately great band and they've got their seventh record out today.
The final chapter of Beach House's four-part album Once Twice Melody is finally out, so if you've been wanting an hour and a half of dream pop, you should be more than happy today. After leaving Triple Crown Records for Rude Records in 2020, we've now got A Will Away's first record with their new label, and it's (okay, I haven't had time to listen to this yet, but based on their past stuff, I'm pretty excited.)
See, pretty badass week for being a slow one. And that's only the artists who did full releases this week. I haven't even touched singles and honestly I don't really feel like it, save for three tracks that caught my eye.
Death Cab for Cutie covered Yoko Ono, dc Talk's Kevin Max covered David Bowie, and Ed Sheeran has collaborated with indie-pop/deathcore act Bring Me The Horizon.
Okay. That's all for today. Go fuck yourselves.
