Thinking of you Nic. This what tough, as I didn't want to revisit memories of those lost ... but I'm inspired by the other comments to allow myself to do so. I can call to mind many happy memories in my grandparents' homes. I always thought I was so lucky to have 4 grandparents alive for so long (the first one passed just after I graduated HS). Today I am remembering the joy they showed when they saw any of their grandchildren.
Oh! And here's one similar to your mom's story (but less embarrassing to a teenager!). One of my grandmother's often boasted about graduating HS second in her class ... she was so proud ... and then she would also laughingly tell us there were only 2 students in her class! Regardless, my grandma was a smart lady ... and went to college after her 4 children were grown and out of the house.
