April happenings in NC live art
In this issue, I cover general April announcements, the kickoff of Durham Plein Air, a quick review on Life Drawing in Hillsborough, and a new NC Art Meets Discord server.
April Announcements
- The April Durham Plein Air events will be at CCB Plaza (in the evening!) and Historic Occoneechee Speedway.
- The April Raleigh Outdoor Painting Group events will be at the pond at the NCMA Park and Pullen Park.
- The North Carolina Plein Air Art Festival (in New Bern) has a Quick Paint event open to all. Online registration is now open.
- Consider joining the Plein Airpril challenge and paint every day in April.
- Sadly, Cheap Joe's Art Stuff is closing. You might be able to snag some deals on art supplies, or at least help support them paying their staff as they clear out their inventory.
- Fuquay-Varina has an upcoming En Plein Air Paint Off. I can't find any information on joining as an artist yet, but you can still join as an art appreciator.
Durham Plein Air (and Urban Sketching) kickoff
Our first event at West Point on the Eno was lovely. While the weather is good, I'm going to try to schedule 2 events per month - one with more urban surroundings and one with more natural. I'm also experimenting with weekday evening events. I'm contemplating on whether to add later times for nocturne subjects.
These events might replace the CAM Raleigh Travel Group's events. Scott and I are chatting about this. In the mean time, please share any ideas for potential locations in Durham and Orange County!
NC Art Meets Discord experiment
I have no idea how online this community is, but I've started a Discord server so we can experiment with it. Discord is a group chat app like Slack. I figured it might be nice to chat informally about art stuff and maybe help connect people for less organized meetups.
If you're interested, here's the join link. If it has expired, contact me for a new one.
Drop-In Life Drawing with Tom Stevens
Yesterday, I joined the Drop-In Life Drawing with Tom Stevens at the Orange County Arts Commission in Hillsborough. I really enjoyed the chiaroscuro lighting. If the location is convenient for you, I recommend trying it out!
Feedback
If you have suggestions for future things I should announce or post, let me know! I will try to run this newsletter monthly. Tips and feedback for the newsletter and the website are always welcome.
Sponsorship
I'm looking for a few sponsors to help make this newsletter and site more sustainable. If you know of a potential business sponsor, please let me know! Also, individuals can support in smaller ways - see options on the about page.
