Mental Reps and Cursed Fonts

Hey friends,

How do you find Will Smith in a snowstorm?

Look for the fresh prints.

Thinking Too Hard ๐Ÿค”

Lots of folks are also thinking about how to keep your skills sharp in this new age of AI. Addy Osmani argues we still need to get our mental reps in.

His suggestion goes:

  1. Come up with a hypothesis of the answer (or direction) BEFORE you prompt an agent.
  2. Investigate why the outcome conforms to or disproves your mental model.
  3. Use every task as a learning opportunity to improve your mental model.
  4. Actively grow your imagination through this verification process.
  5. Record your lessons in a way that improves both you and your agent (And not just in Markdown files. Use linters, tests, and other artifacts as well).

I think the last step is particularly interesting because it involves condensing an abstract concept into something concrete โ€” something that takes a lot of thought. This type of writing, taking a concept and reiterating it with that thought cage you keep on your shoulders, is hugely beneficial to our overall thinking. We've known this since at least the 80s โ€” that writing sharpens and refines your thinking.

So what does your writing look like day to day? Are you getting your mental reps in?
