Rating all the songs that don't belong

Whoa, new email service. I don't like the interface or the font but we are going to power through.

I've been using some form of Apple Music (previously, iTunes) since 2005 and this service knows me. It knows what music I like, it knows I had at least 8 different running playlists that lived on multiple iPods (RIP), it knows that I don't listen to a ton of new music. Which is why my Favorites playlist, updated every Tuesday, has been a reliable place to find some good running tunes. Sure, I would skip songs here and there and even though I like Elliott Smith he's not what I call running music - it managed to get the old hits along with the new faves. It works! Well, until a few weeks ago when I opened it up and it was full of DISNEY MUSIC* and OTHER NONSENSE* I PLAY FOR MY CHILD. All of that, next to LCD Soundsystem, Sleigh Bells, Fiona Apple and Hot Chip. Apple Music clearly has no idea who I am anymore.

**Okay real talk I don't actually hate Disney music. But I would not choose to run to it, nor is it a favorite! It's like, just because I've let the Frozen 2 soundtrack keep playing even though kiddo fell asleep on the ride home doesn't mean I want this to be a part of me!

So let's get to it - I'm going to rate all the imposter songs that clearly have NO BUSINESS being on my Favorites list even though they are apparently played often. Fine!

  • "Remember Me" from Coco soundtrack - okay friends I haven't even fully watched this movie. This isn't fair. Not grading.

  • "You've Got a Friend In Me" from Toy Story - same, I haven't watched this movie? And this song is annoying. C.

  • "Be Prepared" from The Lion King - this song is pretty sinister and cool even if I don't love that it's based off of Nazi imagery and propaganda! B

  • "Fixer Upper" from Frozen - this song is mostly silly but contains true wisdom - "people make bad choices when they're mad or scared or stressed - but throw a little love their way, and you'll bring out their best" - I mean! The range! It goes from jokes about tinkling in the woods to THIS??! A

  • "What Else Can I Do?" from Encanto - aka, whoa, the friend from Jane the Virgin and the always cranky lady from Brooklyn 99 can sing like that?! B

  • "I've Got a Dream" from Tangled - another very silly group song (about the bad guys who like arts and crafts!) but doesn't have the same wisdom as Fixer Upper. A-

  • "Helpless" from Hamilton - COME ON I DON'T LISTEN TO THIS SOUNDTRACK ANYMORE!!

  • "Happy Working Song" from Enchanted - this is the part where I figure out Alan Mencken wrote most of these. This is fine, though I get annoyed when I can't tell if we're making fun of the "I'm a squeaky girl princess who loves to clean!" bit or just...doing the bit. B-

  • "We Know The Way" from Moana - ohhh okay you think I like all stuff by Lin Manuel Miranda, therefore, Hamilton. Moana is a good movie and this is a bop. A-

  • "Into the Unknown" from Frozen 2 - uhhh yeah this song slaps. It's also one of the few Disney songs where the cover (by Panic! At the Disco) is just as good and in some ways better than the movie version. A

  • "The Lonely Goatherd" from The Sound of Music - YES. ALWAYS. JUST NOT WHILE I RUN. A

  • "The Three Bears Crime Family" from Puss in Boots 2 - come on, Apple Music. This is an INSTRUMENTAL from a movie I haven't even watched so I couldn't even tell you what's happening at this bear! I mean, I would guess Goldy and her crew doing crimes? D

  • "Just Around the Riverbend" from Pocahontas - Meh. C

  • "A Whole New World" from Aladdin - it's fine, but there are much better songs from this soundtrack (though sadly Robin Williams will not let anyone listen to his songs unless they watch the whole movie). B-

  • "Touch the Sky" from Brave - a lovely sing-along ditty with a slight Scottish tinge. A-

  • "I'm a Star" from Wish - another movie that no one in our house has seen, and it's the feel good, you're so great, confidence building type of song sung by everyone in the movie. I can't even bring myself to listen to it fully. C

In case you're wondering, my Favorites list got back to normal for a week and then this week brought a bunch of crap like the Sleeping Beauty song (drivel), the Hocus Pocus cover of "One Way or Another" (why?!), more instrumental nonsense and a song from a Tangled second run sequel that doesn't even feature Mandy Moore? I'm downvoting every thing I can.

What have I been listening to lately? Last year I listened to two new albums - The Loveliest Time by Carly Rae Jepsen and Guts by Olivia Rodrigo. I've loved Carly for a while and Olivia's music works because it sounds like stuff I listened to as a teenager and is the only music I listen to as an old person. I'm also still listening to Beyonce and Taylor Swift.

Anyway, hi from this new email service. I'm going to keep working on importing all my old stuff and hoping to write more frequently.
