Happy Birthday to Mineral!

It’s true… our effort to reinvigorate Mineral started this time last year, and it’s matured so much in that time. Mineral’s not exactly all grown up just yet, but it certainly has entered its rebellious teen years… and is getting feisty, so look out!
Although it’s Mineral’s birthday, it’s not taking a day off. We have some awesome new stuff to share… let’s get into it!

Details Make the Design
The well-known designer Charles Eames said, “The details are not the details. They make the design.” This is never more true than when designing complicated, interactive applications. So you’ll be thrilled to hear that we’ve tackled two important, and often overlooked, design components this month… Tooltips and Progress Indicators.
Tooltips have been refreshed to be highly readable, and flexible. They allow several placement options, as well as rich content formatting. Check out Tooltips!
Progress Indicators are critical to maintaining user attention when loading complex data, or performing actions that might take several seconds to complete. That’s why we’ve refreshed them with multiple variant options, including linear/circular, determinate/indeterminate and percentage label. Take a look in Figma for further guidance on Progress Indicators.
Recent Case Studies
Mineral is more than a component library and Figma designs, it’s a collection of modern web product development best practices. The Mineral engineers have been working with two products recently to modernize their development technologies and processes, as well as help start using Mineral components within their apps.
-
DX Operational Intelligence
We helped the team move their app onto the newest create-react-app, remove/update a bunch of dependencies, establish some practices around tests and linting, put an AppShell in place, and get everything ready to swap in more Mineral components.
-
DX SaaS Platform
This app has a much smaller surface area, so in addition to everything done for DOI, we helped their team to replace nearly all relevant UI components with their Mineral equivalents.
Up Next
We’re still going strong, a year on. Here’s what we have planned next.
- Does your product utilize illustrations to share concepts or create a more user-friendly feeling? Guidance for illustration styles is on the way, along with a library of illustrated objects to make creating your own super-easy!
- More components. Right now, we know of needs for Tree, Switch, Stepper, and FileChooser. Check the Mineral roadmap for more info.
- Does your team need a specific component? Let us know!
