the return of level 2! (+ new class starts wed)

Hokusai's "The Great Wave off Kanagawa,' a woodcut print depicting a giant wave towering over three boats of prostrate fishermen with Mount Fuji visible in the background and appearing somewhat similar to the waves in shape and color. I can work myself into a genuine panic by imagining what it would be like to be on one of these boats.
Maybe a terrifying portrayal of forces much larger than yourself isn’t actually the best marketing for an improv class.

First things first: There are still slots open in the Improv for Introverts North class starting next Wednesday. Please pass this on to all interested parties! And the Buddy System $50 discount is in full effect when you sign up two people at once.

But here’s the big news: By popular demand (really) the Level 2 class is roaring back like a big scary wave in a Japanese woodcut. This is open to anyone who’s taken an introductory six-week class from Mercury Improv. It’ll run six weeks and cost $225.

Among the topics we’ll cover:

  • A deeper dive into scenework, with a lot of emphasis on finding the game of the scene

  • How to play scenes with more than two people, including walk-ons, walk-throughs, tag-outs, and group scenes

  • Structures and formats that weave individual scenes into a coherent whole, even without a linear narrative

  • The larger thematic and technical possibilities of improv, including organic work, non-scenic improv, and stage techniques like space bending and split-screen scenes

Great, you say, where do I sign up? Not so fast, bucko. I’m still figuring out scheduling, but it’ll probably start in mid-June on either Tuesdays or Thursdays. If you’re interested, reply to this email. (And if Tuesdays or Thursdays are better for you, let me know.)

I hope you’re thriving, as the kids say, and I hope to see you in class soon.

Till then,
John
