I hope you're all having a spooky Halloween! I'll be playing another concert with the Octava Chamber Orchestra in a couple of weeks. I'm only in half of the program - the other half is being rehearsed in another room while the strings are busy with their portion, so none of us have heard that music yet! I'm looking forward to being in the audience for it.
Here's a little something about the pieces that I am in.
Mehul, Symphony No. 1 - None of us had ever heard this symphony or even heard of Mehul until one of our bassoonists heard this piece on the radio and decided that it would be a fun one for us to play. I'm glad she happened to tune in, because this is some really interesting early romanticism. Apparently symphonies weren't really Mehul's thing, though - he was better known for writing operas and hanging out with Napoleon.
Mendelssohn, Sinfonia No. 7 - Most violinists know Mendelssohn because he wrote an excellent violin concerto. This is a work for an entire string orchestra, and he apparently wrote it when he was 13 years old! Mendelssohn only lived to be 38, which I was surprised to learn, given the fact that he wrote quite a lot of good music. I do like his violin concerto better, but he wrote that at the end of his life - so that 25 years of experience did count for something.
This concert is in Lynnwood at
Maple Park Lutheran Church. Regular adult tickets are $20, students and folks over 65 can get in for $15, and children are free when accompanied by an adult. If you buy tickets in advance
online, they are $2 cheaper.
It starts at 6pm, and Eldan and I are planning to go out to a nearby Korean BBQ afterwards.
