Er, anyway, here's what we're playing:
Lyadov:
The Enchanted Lake
This is a lovely programmatic piece that is about an enchanted lake, and the sheet music for it was published by some folks who wanted to make sure that everyone knew what it was about, so they put the title on there in three languages, to be extra informative:
It is gorgeous and ethereal and serene, even if it
does start out in D-Flat Major.
Prokofiev: Romeo & Juliet, Suite No. 2
This is probably my favorite ballet suite of all time. I love Prokofiev for his sarcasm and unexpected sonority, and he really brings the characters and their relationships to life in this piece. As it happens, Lyadov was Prokofiev's composition teacher, and he reportedly felt very "these damn kids and their devil music" about the whole relationship. It tickles me to think about it.
Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No. 1, with Michael Refvem, piano
It's the most famous Tchaikovsky piano concerto! Come feel some unrequited love and angst through this music; nobody does those like Tchaikovsky. I'll be working out all of my complicated unfulfilled dreams on stage as part of the backing band for this one.
The concert is at Shorecrest Performing Arts Center this time, attached to
Shorecrest High School. It's not our usual venue, but it's a nice auditorium, and we'll make it worth your while. The concert is at 7:30 on Saturday, February 24th, and you can get your tickets in advance
here if you want to, or at the door.
I like to send these newsletters out a little more than a week before each concert I play, but this past week has been a mess for me and my family, so here we are. I hope you're all well, and thanks for reading - and listening!
For my next gig, you can hear me play some Cole Porter in the pit for the musical
Anything Goes. That'll be March 23, 24, 25, 29, & 30 at the Shoreline Community College Theater, and I'll send out more details closer to that time.
