Thoughts and Musings: Delight
A few years ago I was listening to a podcast about delight, of all things. Who really thinks much about that word? Delight. I hadn’t.
But the guest’s words struck me, and I wrote them down in my notebook: “I believe it is our duty to share delight,” he said. He went on to tell a story. Once he was given a small tomato plant as a gift. He was traveling, so in order to get his tomato plant home, he had to bring it on an airplane. He shared his memory of walking through the airport with this baby tomato plant in his hands. It turned heads. People stopped and smiled. It brought joy to fellow travelers to see something so unexpected. He recalled it being such a wonderful experience to be able to delight people.
Sometimes I have a hard time putting my feelings into words. But after hearing that podcast, I finally had the words to explain the goal of my art practice: I want to share delight. The goal for my art is that basic. I want to share with others the delight I experience from noticing our wonderous world.
The story also made me think of my favorite Desmond Tutu quote, “Do your own little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.”
If something as insignificant as a tomato plant in an airport can bring people joy, imagine what we can do if we intentionally strive to fulfill our “duty of sharing delight”.
We might overwhelm the world.

I’ll leave you with one last bit of delight…
In August I set off on an impromptu trip to spend four nights in a Minnesota State Park camper cabin on my own. It was a delightful experience! I used the time in the forest to reset, explore, make art, and flesh out a grant proposal I wanted to write.

Share some delight with someone today!
