Gride and Broom
Just over a week ago, Riley and I got married in a private ceremony on the banks of the Mississippi River in New Orleans. For those new to the lore, I was born in a hospital on the banks of the Mississippi in Minneapolis, and Riley was born in a hospital on the banks of the river in New Orleans. For our ceremony, we sat beside the river, on a quilt, next to a little altar as the sun set. We said our prayers, made our vows, exchanged rings and a kiss.

When asked how it was, I keep saying “you know when ceremony really hits?” or “dang, humans are really onto something with this ceremony and ritual stuff.” This is stuff I knew in my head, but hadn’t felt in my body for a moment. It felt like we had gone through some sort of portal. Nothing had changed, everything had changed, etc etc. In short, it was so beautiful and I don’t have the words quite yet. The next day, we re-united with our families for a few days of fun and celebration.
The colors, sounds, people, buildings and general vibe in New Orleans is so creatively inspiring to me. Being there and walking through the colorful streets made me excited to start a book I recently got from New Material Books called Color Problems: A Practical Manual for the Lay Student of Color by Emily Noyes Vanderpool. Emily Noyes Vanderpoel (1842-1939) was an artist, collector, scholar, and historian working at the dawn of the 20th century. In this book (originally published in 1902), she combines color theory with her own unique way of doing color analysis through her color plates. If you want a little taste of her work, upload an image to this website to generate your own Vanderpool style color analysis.
Now that I’m back home in Washington for the grey and dark December, studying color feels right on time. This coming weekend, Emma and I are moving our presses, cabinets, type and more into our very own studio space! While Emma’s uninsulated garage worked well for the summer, it’s not proving tenable for the colder, wetter months. Wish us luck with our U-Haul adventure this Sunday!
Lastly, here are some pictures from our wedding and time in New Orleans. I am so grateful for this season of life and for all of you who are a part of my web!
xoxo,
mag
